Purrs and Spurs is an organization dedicated to caring for and advocating on behalf of the feral and homeless cats that reside on the campus of Tarleton State University. The mission of Purrs and Spurs is to care for and advocate on behalf of the feral and homeless cats that call our campus home. Using humane Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) methods, the Organization is naturally stabilizing the populatio
n of feral cats, making the cats healthier, and preventing new litters of kittens. Trap-Neuter-Return is widely held as the most humane and effective way of controlling feral cat populations over an extended period of time. Purrs and Spurs performs many duties as feral cat advocates within our University. First and foremost, we educate the campus community and administration about the cats and the TNR system. We advise the public on how to be the best host for feral cats. Purrs and Spurs serves as a channel by which conflicts between feral cats and humans may be resolved in a manner which satisfies all parties involved. Secondly, Purrs and Spurs performs all of the duties necessary for a successful Trap-Neuter-Return program. Our trained volunteers assist with trapping and transporting cats to veterinary clinics. We provide food and water to each colony of cats and also assist in constructing, placing, and maintaining approved feral cat shelters. One of the most rewarding duties that Purrs and Spurs performs is responding to instances of kittens found on campus. Kittens who are young enough can be socialized to humans and therefore become loving members of a human household. And of course, kittens are just plain cute! Purrs and Spurs performs many other duties too extensive to mention. To find out more, get involved!
