🎉 Celebrating the Retirement of Dr. Barbara Tarter 🎉

Today we celebrate the remarkable career and lasting legacy of Dr. Barbara Tarter, whose dedication to higher education, service, and student success has shaped countless lives.

Dr. Tarter’s academic journey began at Ohio University, where she completed her B.S., Master’s, and Ph.D. in just six years. Her career took her across the country—from serving as an Assistant Professor at Southwest Texas State University, to leadership roles as Director of Admissions and Assistant Vice President at Emporia State University, and later as Assistant Vice President of Academic Affairs and Dean for Enrollment at Austin Peay State University.

Dr. Tarter joined Marshall University, serving as Assistant Vice President of Academic Affairs and Dean of Enrollment, and later as a valued member of the Communication Studies faculty, serving 29 years at Marshall. A passionate educator, she has taught a wide range of undergraduate and graduate courses, including First Year Seminar, Legal Communication, Persuasion, Organizational Communication, Grant Writing, Consulting, and more—always with a focus on helping students grow personally and professionally.

Beyond the classroom, Dr. Tarter’s impact is extensive. She has served as a Peer Reviewer for the Higher Learning Commission, consulted on enrollment efforts for colleges, universities, and the U.S. Army, and authored numerous successful grants—including three million-dollar TRIO grants that expanded access and opportunity for Marshall students.

Guided by her faith, Dr. Tarter is deeply committed to service and mission work, supporting organizations such as the Huntington City Mission, Branches, Dress for Success, and missionaries in Mexico. And as anyone who knows her can attest—her love for animals is legendary, from her two Rottweilers to the many critters she cares for and welcomes.

Dr. Tarter’s career reflects a life of service, leadership, mentorship, and purpose. We are profoundly grateful for her years of commitment to Marshall University and the countless students and colleagues whose lives she has enriched. We wish her every joy and fulfillment in this next chapter.

🎓 Celebrating Our Graduating Graduate Student: Justin Tackett 🎓

As they prepare to say goodbye to Marshall after being with us since 2019, we want to take a moment to celebrate Justin Tackett and all they have contributed to our community. Justin has been an indispensable asset to the Communication Studies Presentation Center, bringing dedication, thoughtfulness, and a genuinely wonderful personality to everything they do. We will truly miss seeing them around here!

Justin is heading to Virginia next, where they are excited to explore the broader world of education—working with and within libraries and school administration. They are passionate about fostering the curiosity and confidence in learning that they developed during their time at Marshall and hope to carry that forward in meaningful ways. In addition, Justin plans to pursue opportunities in human resources and public relations, with a focus on helping people within organizations feel confident, supported, and assured in themselves and one another.
We wish Justin all the very best as they finalize their thesis and begin this next chapter full of adventures, opportunities, and excitement. Marshall won’t be the same without them—but we can’t wait to see what they accomplish next! 💚📚✨

We’re excited to spotlight Jack Cross (M.A., Marshall University), a Communication Studies alumnus who is making an impact through teaching, scholarship, and competitive speech and debate.

Jack is currently a Visiting Assistant Professor and Assistant Director of Forensics at Ohio University, where he is deeply committed to empowering students. Through classroom instruction and Speech & Debate competition, Jack helps students develop strong public speaking, research, and critical thinking skills that serve them well beyond the activity.

After earning his B.S. in Communication from Ohio University, Jack spent two years coaching high school forensics before pursuing graduate study at Marshall University. While at Marshall, he coached the MU Thundering Word and focused his research on the application of neuroqueer theory within rhetorical criticism. His scholarship earned him the William Denman Award for Outstanding Scholarship as well as the Top Student Paper Award from the NCA Disability Issues Caucus, recognizing his work tracing the neuroqueering of identity formation.

Outside of his academic and coaching roles, Jack enjoys reading, video and tabletop gaming, watching both reality and scripted television, cooking, and spending time outdoors exploring parks and trails. He is especially happy to be back home at Ohio University, continuing the work he loves in a place that feels deeply familiar.

We’re proud of Jack and the meaningful contributions he’s making as both an educator and scholar!
