Students in Simpson College’s Honors May Term course, Biology of S*x, had the opportunity to learn from alum Stephanie Twohey Coughenour ’20, a NICU nurse and flight nurse trainee with Mercy’s life flight/transport program. Stephanie shared insights on maternal healthcare deserts in Iowa and the critical care provided to newborns across rural communities.

Student Adelle Patterson is holding a training simulation premature newborn (25 weeks gestation), highlighting just how small and vulnerable many NICU patients are.
