I hope this message finds you well as we move with alacrity toward the conclusion of another academic year. It is with a sense of profound disappointment that I regret to inform you that due to insufficient funding support, we have made the difficult decision to cancel the Black Excellence Scholarships and Awards Gala (B.LA.C.) which was to take place on Friday, May 17, 2024.
To all who contributed time, energy, and financial support and to the students who eagerly anticipated the event, we offer our sincerest apologies. We share in your disappointment particularly given the paucity of spaces and opportunities on campus that acknowledge and celebrate Black students who have distinguished themselves academically.
We would like to express our gratitude and appreciation to all who contributed to the planning of the gala as well as those who provided financial support. Your consideration, dedication, and commitment to Black students are truly appreciated.
Despite this setback, our commitment to our mission of acknowledging, celebrating, and supporting Black excellence within our community remains unabated. Toward that end, while the physical event will not proceed as planned, we are pleased to share that we have decided to proceed with the selection and distribution of scholarships and awards to deserving applicants to honor their achievements.
For those who graciously committed funding support for the gala, we are happy to return your financial commitment as soon as possible or you can maintain your commitment via options below.
-You can request a refund of your contribution.
-You can designate that your entire contribution be converted into student scholarships which will be given in the name of your department, office, or organization name to students who applied for BLAC Gala scholarships.
-You can designate a portion of your contribution to be converted into student scholarships and the balance be returned to you.
If you should decide to contribute to the scholarship fund, please know your support directly impacts and contributes to the academic success of Black students here at UC Irvine.
Again, apologies, and thank
