Check out our story for some tips for the now open VMCAS for Fall 2023!
—
Don’t know where to start? Applications aren’t due until September, so you have plenty of time. Get started now since the applications have opened!
✏️You can enter your personal information, order transcripts, and enter in your experiences. VMCAS offers paid transcript entry, but it’s actually pretty easy to do yourself!
✏️Essays can feel daunting. When writing your personal statement for VMCAS, be authentic, genuine, and professional! Some schools require supplemental essay questions as well. Get a head start on these so that you have plenty of time to plan, review, and revise. Also, have someone else read your essays! Professors, advisors, tutors, veterinarians, mentors. Anyone can give you great feedback and a fresh perspective before you submit your essay.
✏️Ask for letters of recommendation as early as possible! Your writers will need plenty of time because they are very likely to procrastinate too. VMCAS requires at least 3 LOR’s. Check if the school(s) you’re applying to require the LOR’s be from specific people. Choose people that know you WELL and can attest to your work ethic and potential. As they submit your letters, write thank you notes to show your appreciation!
✏️School programs can be selected beginning May 12, 2022. Make sure to check the prerequisites and GPA requirements, as well as if the school requires standardized tests such as the GRE and CASPer. Many schools require supplemental applications, essays, and fees. Research the differences in curriculum, tuition, location, etc. to know which is right for you!
✏️Interviews… practice interview questions! Dress professional, even if it’s virtual. Keep up to date on hot topics in veterinary medicine (check out AVMA, TVMA, or DVM360). Look at the Student Doctor Network forums for advice and example questions from previous interviewees! Don’t rehearse too much, though. Most importantly, be yourself.
💫Be confident, check dates and requirements, and ask for advice! Most importantly, get started early.
