MCI: Mass Casualty Incident

At KVCC our students learn about and work through simulated MCI’s. It prepares them for the chaos, the increased radio traffic, and the exhaustion.

Last evening our southern counties had the unthinkable happen; possible EF4 tornado. Our thoughts and prayers are with the residents of Cass, St. Joseph, Calhoun, and Branch County.

Happy New Year! Stay safe, pull over for emergency vehicles, and keep your head on a swivel.

Our new paramedic students are in full swing of classes and lab. Currently they learning the most invasive procedure: endotracheal intubation.

A procedure we are honored to be able to perform to help sustain a patients life. While no one ever wants a situation where we do have to intubate, it’s a skill that is perfected and appreciated.

Welcome back!!
Classes are back in full swing! From early mornings to late nights our new paramedic and MFR’s classes have dived right in to EMS lifestyle.

Also please remember September is Su***de Prevention Month.

Being an EMS provider doesn’t always mean having to splint broken bones, driving lights and sirens to the hospital, giving bandaids, or performing extensive procedures. It can also mean giving those who are having the worst days of their lives hope. Letting them know to try one more day.

Everyone has a story. We strive to be their light.

Happy Wednesday!!! Let us introduce our instructor of the day, Taylor!

About Me: Hi, I’m Taylor! I am married and have one dog. I have worked various roles in healthcare over the past 12 years, and I soon will be starting my final semester in nursing!

When I started in EMS: I started shortly after I moved to Kalamazoo and began working as a firefighter/MFR in 2013. After starting as a firefighter, I realized I enjoyed running the medical calls and decided to attend the KVCC EMT program in 2016, followed by the paramedic program in 2017.

When I started at KVCC: I started at valley in 2021 as a lab instructor and received my IC license in 2023.

3 FACTS ABOUT ME: I have currently (knock on wood) kept all the plants in my house alive for over a year. A bucket list item of mine is camping at each of the Michigan state parks. My dog has 87 toys, not including his camper toys (yes, I counted, yes, he’s spoiled 🐶)

3 THINGS I LOVE: Camping with my husband and dog, waterfalls (even better if we had to hike to see it), and a crisp fall day with some overcast 🍂

Faculdade of day: Paul Rigby 🚁

About me: I have spent a long time working in the EMS and Nursing disciplines in the area. I went through the paramedic program at KVCC, then received my BS at WMU. I then went to Miami, FL. and received my BSN and began working at Bronson Hospital. I then flew with Aircare for 14 years and received my Masters in Nursing in Healthcare Simulation. I also have 3 teenage boys (13,15,17) who keep me laughing quite often and busy with their sports of baseball and golf.

When I started in EMS: I completed the EMT and paramedic program at KVCC in 1999 (yeah might need a calculator to figure out how many years that is)

When I started teaching at KVCC: I began instructing on a regular basis in the winter of 2021

3 Facts about me: I am a college hockey referee, I was an exchange student in Sweden when I was 17, I have run 2 marathons in my lifetime (which is plenty)

3 things I love: Sports (NFL and NHL), simulation scenarios, Live music

Trauma Tuesday💥🪜🪚🧨💣🪓🚗

KVCC paramedic students had the privledge of the presence of Dr. Oreste Romeo, MD, board-certified trauma surgeon in Kalamazoo MI, today. They were able to sit in on lecture, learn, and ask him questions regarding to PHTLS (pre-hospital trauma life support) and the “after” of when we transfer care to the hospital setting.

EMS uses multiple different pneumonics, with one we continue to use in trauma patients: DCAPBTLS.

Per the Oxford dictionary the definition of a Paramedic is: “a person trained to give emergency medical care to people who are injured or ill, typically in a setting outside of a hospital”

It is also: a listening ear, a protector, an advocate for the community, a hand to hold, a learner, a continuous educator, and the calm of the storm.

Whether it’s in the middle of the road, in your home, in the grocery store, or during a sporting event medical emergencies don’t wait for the “perfect time”.

Our strength is not always physical. We are trained for this.

Happy weekend all. We have more facility for you to meet! Introducing Jackson: The brains and the brawn!

About Me:
I’m Jackson! I have been working as a first responder in various capacities in Kalamazoo County for the last 5 years. I grew up here in Kalamazoo and I am proud to be in a career where I can help my community.

When I started in EMS:
I started in EMS when I took my MFR course at KVCC in the winter of 2019. I started as an EMT-Basic on the road in February 2020. Since then I have gotten my Paramedic License and Firefighter I&II. I currently work full time as a Firefighter, and I am in the process of getting my instructor/coordinator license to further my abilities to educate in the EMS field.

When I started at KVCC:
I first started working as a lab clinician at KVCC in April 2023. I was always impressed with the quality of education I received at KVCC and I have always had an interest in teaching, so deciding to work in the EMS program was an easy decision.

3 FACTS ABOUT ME:
I live with my amazing fiancé who is also a Paramedic along with our 2 cats named Doug and Larry. I am a huge history nerd. I think Halloween is the best holiday.

3 THINGS I LOVE:
I love learning about and getting better at cooking and weightlifting. Being in the mountains and enjoying a nice quiet evening outside. The movie Airplane.
