URI Sustainability and Composting Project

URI Sustainability and Composting Project Utilize the University's resources and have a sustainable composting program! Resources for the project will be obtained from specific locations.

Students enrolled in PLS 402 from The University of Rhode Island have collaborated on the idea of having a sustainable composting facility. Peckham Farm, Agronomy Farm and lands and grounds. There is also the possibility of using dining hall waste from Butterfield for a composting option. Alongside these options for composting there may be two valuable resources available, fish gully (fish waste)

and wood chips. With these resources we hope to provide the opportunity to produce a sustainable product and use it within the university.

We are asking anyone with the drive and interest for sustainable practices willing to help the URI campus. Please get in contact with us, we would like to put together a team this fall semester 2016 (if all goes well). We would like to gauge the interest of the URI community so send us questions or any information by messaging or commenting. We encourage new ideas. We plan to set up a meeting if we have enough participation. Thanks again, looking forward to upcomming possibilities!

Check out this website on multiple composting methods including small and large scale operations. Good information on manure composting as well!

The market for organic wastes has grown in the last few years, making it more profitable to operate a commercial composting business.

The main component of composting is knowing exactly what waste ingredients will be generated, and from these ingredients, how will they be used to achieve the highest quality compost at the lowest economical cost!

Our predicted waste streams are as follows,
1. University Farms
A. Peckham Farm (manure and bedding)
B. Agronomy Farm (crop residues)
2. Dinning Services (Butterfield and Hope)
3. Lands and Grounds (grass clippings and yard waste)
4. Campus Coffee Shops (coffee ground)
5. Port of Galilee (liquid fish waste)

There are still more options to consider. But the above waste streams are University generated and will be broken down further to get a numerical values for each option. From there a rough weight can be calculated which is necessary in estimating the amount a compost the University can produce.
