✨Our Artist Spotlight this week features one of our very own members, Jalynn Baker!

Jalynn is a photographer and writer. Her work finds its foundation in a love for stories. As a photographer, she finds great joy in partnering with the people in front of her camera to tell the story of who they are. Jalynn’s work is particularly focused on centering the stories of marginalized people. In everything she creates, she seeks to reveal the dignity within communities and amplify quiet stories. She is currently experimenting with ceramics and embroidery and reviving her own family’s stories that have been forgotten.

Her next adventure takes her to Mexico, where she will work to empower others through creative storytelling.

We will miss her presence dearly, and wish her the best of luck on her new adventure! We know it will be amazing and are so proud!

✨Our Artist Spotlight of the week features Chase Williamson!

Chase Williamson, a visual artist based in Knoxville, Tennessee, explores the profound connection between Black women, the Southern Black Garden, and water imagery. Through oil, acrylic, and familial fabric, she creates revitalized perspectives on historical southern regions charged with painful remembrance. By situating Black femmes amidst vivid florals and racialized landscapes, Williamson exposes life not predetermined by framed social perspectives, aiming to reclaim land and water as cultural spaces.

A painter and MFA candidate at the University of Tennessee, Williamson draws inspiration from her southern upbringing in Middle Tennessee. Her research-based approach explores identity and historical landscapes. Williamson’s art has been showcased in institutions like the Museum of Science and Industry, the Frist Art Museum, cë Gallery, and Ewing Gallery. Williamson was also a Curatorial Fellow at the Frist Art Museum, an artist-in-residence at the Atlantic Center for the Arts, and has had work published in Burnaway magazine.

✨Our Artist spotlight this week features Ame Houston!

Ame Houston, originally from Metro Detroit and now residing in East Tennessee, reflects on the parallels between urban gentrification in Detroit and Knoxville. Through surreal paintings blending nature and urbanity, she confronts the impermanence of landscapes and memories. Her work serves as a haunting reminder of the changes unfolding in Knoxville’s urban fabric.

Houston is a self-taught painter and multimedia artist. In her work, she explores themes of botany, urban decay, and the cycle of life in her series ‘Love Letters.’ Inspired by her urban roots, she seeks to capture the ever changing city landscape in her art.
