The Start of an Idea

The idea behind Demos was to create factual, open and balanced discussion in politics, international relations, and economics, business, finance. This idea was inspired by reading certain journals from the early 20th century for a research project at Lake Forest College. These journals featured both sides of a debate, something not seen in many journals, magazines, or newspapers today. With seemingly high levels partisanship, accusations of “fake news,” and the rampant spread of “Alternative facts,” it seemed that an academic journal for politics and economics could be beneficial. Maybe it seems unconventional to use the very subjects that cause partisanship to build bridges, but the thought behind it was that scholarly knowledge and empiricism could bring people together and lead to greater dialogue and impartiality.

Published yearly, Demos, features an accumulation of academic work at Lake Forest College from the past year. Pieces in the yearly publication will be published in the print and the online version.

A neat aspect of Demos is the ability to publish anonymously. This way, writers who research possibly controversial topics do not need to fear any push back. This option is not available to works that are submitted for courses or a grade, and every work, anonymous or not, will be eld to the same high academic standard. Writers are still required to disclose any and all research methods or techniques and research funding.
