ABOUT THE FILM: Where does voguing come from, and what, exactly, is throwing shade? This landmark documentary provides a vibrant snapshot of the 1980s through the eyes of New York City’s Black and Latinx Harlem drag-ball scene. Made over seven years, PARIS IS BURNING offers an intimate portrait of rival fashion “houses,” from fierce contests for trophies to house mothers offering sustenance in a world rampant with homophobia, transphobia, racism, AIDS, and poverty. Featuring legendary voguers, drag queens, and trans women — including Willi Ninja, Pepper LaBeija, Dorian Corey, and Venus Xtravaganza.

*For folks who may not feel comfortable in a theater at this time, the LGBTQ+ Student Life Office has a DVD copy of the film for check-out.

: This photo from the 1987 Orifllamme yearbook represents the anonymous students of Matrix, the first official student club organized by and for LGBTQ students at Franklin & Marshall College.

The stories of these students and others are being documented by the LGBTQ History project, created as an independent study by PJ Howard '21 and funded by the Nissley Grant. More than 20+ archived interviews with various LGBTQ+ alumni, faculty, staff and current students whose time at F&M spans from 1962 to the present day. The project aims to be the first step in recovering the lost history of F&M's q***r community.

Howard is currently directing and producing a documentary on her findings and aims to release a film this summer.
