In the meantime, Design Manager Molly, who also moonlights as Director of FunComm, is in MA at the EMU Passive House Boot Camp workshop with Luke, Madison, Wills , Bird and Dave. They're studying hard on the ins and outs of air sealing and btus/ft2 and were able to fit in a little bowling on the side.

Crystal likes to say that we receive inquiries weekly, but this little guy has been curious about our work on a daily basis these days. Might be the compost bin. Or it might be Matt's collection of curios on his office windowsill featuring works by current and former GM artists - Tala, Luke and Cramer. Matt is fast on his feet and was able to document the lead for the sales department with this picture.

Spring is in the air! And what better place to be than putting in a new step-less entry to welcome all ice cream lovers for a little scoop of heaven in downtown sunny Bethlehem NH. Shout out to Molly's vision and to Andre, Luke, Forest and Dan Gray @gray.construction.nh for tidying things up in a timely manner. If you look carefully through the photo scroll the discerning viewer may see a local celebrity who came to visit during construction... Littleton's own Citizen of the Year Chad Miller stopped by to see how they do it in Bethlehem ... and of course to sample some of SSICs finest.

We're down to socks and slippers at 79 Main Street. As we move toward close out on projects we get to a place where everybody has to take off their shoes when they enter the building. Usually there is a big friendly sharpie sign reminding folks. The floors at 79 Main on the second floor are the originals with lots of fun patches where a spiral staircase entered in the southeast corner (pic 5) where the bolts were shorn from a printing press (pic3) and various fun patches and stains. For folks who love old hardwood floors, 79 Main St is a real cornucopia. Two apartments and one commercial unit left to rent. Call 603 788 2619 if you're interested

JOBSITE UPDATES

Tellman Hill

Tristan is making good progress on the awesome Cider Barn for Tellman Hill Farm in Whitefield NH. This is a fun one. We love apples. We love cider. We love Po! And her folks. It's win, win, win.

It's also fun from a building science standpoint. Half of the barn will house a cider making facility and a commercial kitchen (with an automatic donut maker … what could be better?!). The commercial kitchen requires a cleanable surface on the interior walls of the food production facilities that are approved by NH health officials. These surfaces are not permeable. Normally our walls dry to the inside and to the outside. In this case, they will only dry to the outside. We expect the kitchen/cidery space to experience very high RH while in operation so it's of vital importance that we not trap any water v***r that escapes into the wall assembly.

To achieve this we designed a wall assembly that is sort of inside out from what many builders and architects know so well. From inside to outside the wall does this: impervious cleanable surface (TRUSSCORE) / 2x4 strapping for mech chase / 2” polyiso rigid foam / ½” CDX plywood / 2x6 framing / v***r variable membrane / strapping / vertical pine cladding.

GOINGS ON AT GARLAND MILL In the olden days (12 years ago to be exact) the Garland Mill only offered two weeks paid vacation with no holidays. At the time we decided to remedy the situation by adding a paid holiday each year for twelve years. All 12 at once would have been prohibitively expensive but one at a time we figured we could afford.

Believe it or don't, this is year 12! Recently we've been voting on which holiday to add to our mix at our annual Christmas party. We held our party this year at the . The food and the company was so good we forgot to vote. So after the New Year, Crystal send out a poll. There was some jockeying for a fall holiday or a spring holiday (we have a big gap between MLK day and Memorial Day after all) but Andre pitched New Years Eave and everyone jumped on board. So the final GM paid holiday is now New Years Eave. Which we all agree makes a lot of sense.

PEOPLE - Matt completed his long anticipated sabbatical this fall. He had a great three months which included some traveling to Ireland with Heather and seeing family and friends as far afield as L.A. and Maine. He also did some home renovation projects which included bathing hemlock shiplap in the brook (don't ask and extra credit to Jeff who helped.) In addition, Matt achieved a long time dream by taking a wooden boat building course in Maine. Upon his return, he shared some photos from the trip in a slideshow that was definitely the highlight of our December staff meeting. Some of the photos are included here.

Matt learned that he really liked wooden boats. Garland Mill learned that we really like having Matt as our Production Manager.

Three month sabbaticals are an important part of Garland Mill’s commitment to healthy work life balance and are available to all employees after 10 years of service. Next on-deck for Sabbatical is Molly!
