🌍 NICRP joins communities around the world in recognizing World Refugee Day.

Today, we recognize the strength, resilience, and courage of refugee children and families who are building new lives in communities across Nevada. As they adapt to new schools, languages, and environments, refugee children continue to learn, grow, and contribute to the communities they call home.

This year's World Refugee Day theme, "Until Everyone Is Safe," reminds us of the importance of creating welcoming communities where all children have the opportunity to feel safe, supported, and empowered to thrive.

On Thursday, the Nevada Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program joined community members at a World Refugee Day celebration hosted by Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada and the ECDC African Community Center. During the event, they shared lead poisoning prevention resources and raised awareness about the importance of protecting children and families from lead exposure. 🌟

⚠️ Potential risk of lead contamination ⚠️ Darice “Timeless Minis” children’s toys are being recalled due to potential lead contamination. The recalled products were sold separately and include miniature red wagons, watering cans, and chairs. The toys were packaged with a brown label displaying the brand names “Darice” and “Timeless Minis.”

💡 Why it Matters:
These toys were found to contain lead levels above federal safety limits and pose a lead poisoning hazard. The recalled products were sold by various retailers through 2016 and resold by various third-party sellers and on other websites through April 2026.

Heavy metals are toxic if ingested and can cause lifelong health and developmental problems in children. Most children with lead poisoning do not look or act sick, so parents should take these next steps to leave lead behind.

We encourage you to:
✅ Keep the products away from children immediately.
↩️ Safely discard the product.
📞 Do not sell or give these toys away.
🗣️ Tell others – share this information with family, friends, colleagues, and community partners.
🩺 Contact your healthcare provider if you are concerned about potential lead exposure.

Could there be lead in your blender? 🤔 A recent Consumer Reports investigation detected high levels of lead in some Black+Decker PowerCrush BL1230 blenders after reviewing an incident report* involving a child with elevated blood lead levels.

While no formal recall has been issued and many details about the case remain unknown, we recommend families:
🗑️ Consider discontinuing use of the product
📞 Contact the company with questions
🩺 Talk to their child’s doctor about lead exposure concerns
🚨 Stay updated with lead recalls and safety alerts

Home renovations, open windows, outdoor play, and tracked-in soil and dust can all create opportunities for lead exposure. Young children are especially vulnerable because lead dust and soil can easily get on their hands, toys, and other objects.

Here’s how we test items for lead without sending them to a lab! 🔍

An XRF analyzer is a powerful screening tool that helps licensed professionals determine whether lead or other heavy metals may be present in an item. These devices are commonly used for quick screenings prior to follow-up lab testing.

❓Did you know? children’s products cannot contain more than 100 parts per million of lead. XRF testing helps identify items that may exceed this limit.
