There has never been a better time to be an Accounting student at UNLV! – The UNLV Department of Accounting welcomed its largest group of accounting majors last week during our student orientation event. Students had the chance to meet every UNLV Accounting faculty member, to learn best practices for success, to network with accounting professionals, and to enjoy some fun games, prizes, swag bags, and a networking lunch; what a way to kick off their first semester as part of the Accounting program at UNLV! – Special thanks to members of our Accounting Advisory Board for making events like this possible through their support.

UNLV Accounting was grateful to welcome Jerry Maginnis to campus last week as a guest speaker, sharing experiences and advice from his illustrious career in public accounting and answering questions students have as they pursue their accounting degrees and look forward to careers in the profession. As part of our first-semester core curriculum, students read Jerry’s approachable and insightful book focused on helping students and early career professionals to prepare for and find success in their accounting careers. – During his visit, Jerry was kind enough to speak to two classes of new majors, to visit with faculty and members of our Lee Business School leadership team, and to host an open forum for accounting students in our various student organizations. We were grateful for his tireless energy, thoughtful remarks and responses to student inquiries, and his individual attention as he visited with students, signed books, and provided encouragement to every student he met. Thank you, Jerry, for being a UNLV Accounting Rebel for a day!

Aaron Saiewitz (UNLV) and his co-authors, Mary Kate Dodgson (Lehigh University) and Marcus Doxey (The University of Alabama), recently had their paper "Examining the Use of Trait Skepticism Feedback in Auditor Training" accepted for publication in Accounting Horizons. The authors used an experiment to examine an audit firm training technique where auditors are provided feedback on their natural (“trait”) skepticism level and prompted to be more skeptical if the auditors think they are low on trait skepticism. The research team found that low-trait skeptics may benefit from this practice, but it may have unintended consequences for high-trait skeptics. Dr. Saiewitz's research is supported by the UNLV Accounting Alumni Faculty Fellowship.
