✔️ PROGRAM REACCREDITED ✔️

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Human Research Protection Program has been reaccredited by the Association for the Accreditation of Human Research Protection Programs, whose criteria are considered the gold standard for protecting participants in research. Accredited institutions must follow rigorous standards for ethics, quality and protections for human research and are among the world’s most respected research organizations.

The university’s accreditation, which has been continuously maintained since 2008, is valid until June 2031.

Notice something different about our website?

It now features another one of our 2025 annual report stories - "Addressing childhood obesity in rural areas"

Rural children are about 25% more likely than urban peers to experience obesity, a trend driven by limited access to nutritious food, higher poverty rates, lack of health services and more.

Dipti Dev leads a team aiming to narrow this gap through the Healthy Children, Healthy Communities project, which helps rural child care programs foster healthy eating habits among 3- to 5-year-olds by using a strategy called responsive feeding. The approach uses coaching and feedback to encourage children to self-regulate their food intake and make conscious eating decisions based on hunger and fullness cues. The Nebraska team is training child care providers using the online EAT (Ecological Approach To) for Prevention program, which Dev developed.

🐜 ARTHROPOD VISION 🐜

Arthropods are small, but they could play an outsized role in tackling some of the world’s biggest challenges.

That’s the idea behind the Community for Arthropod Research, Education, and Materials Innovation at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Led by Husker researchers Eileen Hebets and Angela Pannier, CAREMI is driven by a vision that arthropods – a vast group of animals that includes insects, spiders and crabs – could serve as a unifying focal point for interdisciplinary research in medicine, agriculture, materials science and more.

Most recently this initiative included some buzz-worthy food from Brooklyn Bugs and an eye-catching installation at the Great Plains Art Museum!

🎤 COMING SOON! 🎤

Registration is now open for No Coast SciComm, a three-day virtual conference promoting effective strategies for engaging diverse audiences with science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

The event, hosted biennially by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, is set to take place Sept. 16-18 and will bring together researchers, students, educators, evaluators, policymakers, journalists, artists and more to share emerging practices and key insights.

Those who are interested in participating in the Science Slam should apply by Sept. 8 and submit their abstract to be considered for a 15-minute conference talk.

Birth to age 3 are critical years for development, especially for children with disabilities who need extra support. Early interventionists meet with families and provide services such as occupational, speech or physical therapy to help children learn and grow.

Since 2021, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln has worked with state agencies to build and implement a professional development model grounded in early childhood coaching to enhance early intervention services and improve outcomes for infants and toddlers with disabilities in Nebraska.

Michael Burton has been named director of Nebraska Innovation Studio, effective Aug. 17. Nebraska Innovation Studio, located on Nebraska Innovation Campus, is a community-oriented makerspace that serves as a hub for innovators, artists and entrepreneurs.

Burton, an artist, filmmaker, educator and creative technologist, succeeds long-time Innovation Studio director David Martin, who retired in July 2026. Burton previously served as an associate professor of art and digital fashion for the Department of Textiles, Merchandising and Fashion Design at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. He brings more than 16 years of experience working at the intersection of art, technology and hands-on making to the Innovation Studio team.

🎈 NEBRASKA LECTURE NEWS 🎈

Some of the mightiest mice in the world live in the high Andes mountains at heights once thought to be uninhabitable by mammals. University of Nebraska–Lincoln biologist Jay Storz is trying to determine how they do it.

Storz, George Holmes Professor in the School of Biological Sciences, will present the next Nebraska Lecture at 3:30 p.m. Oct. 6 in the Nebraska Union’s Swanson Auditorium.

The title of Storz’s talk is “Life Ascending: Extreme Animals and Exploration in the High Andes.” A live webstream will be available on the Nebraska Lectures website.

The Office of Research and Innovation invites faculty to submit information for the 2025-26 Research and Creative Activity Report.

Faculty can submit at this site. The deadline is Sept. 14 at 5 p.m.

The annual report documents Nebraska faculty’s successes in research, creative endeavors and scholarship. This year’s compilation, which will be published online, covers the period between July 1, 2025, and June 30, 2026. The purpose of the report is to provide a record of faculty achievements and highlight the depth and breadth of activities across all disciplines.

🦴 PREHISTORIC QUESTIONS 🦴

Thirty-five years on — well, 12 million technically — Ashfall Fossil Beds State Historical Park continues to offer up important glimpses of prehistoric life in Nebraska.

Consider, for example, Borophaginae, known commonly as bone-crushing dogs. In recent years, researchers have found footprints believed to be from these carnivores amid the ash at the site. They also have found tooth marks that seem to match the dogs’ teeth in the bones of rhinos, horses and camels that died in the ash, said Sam Matson, the park’s superintendent.
