Through the California Community News (CA-CCN) initiative, CSU students are gaining hands-on journalism skills by reporting on their local communities: https://www.calstate.edu/csu-system/news/Pages/From-Classroom-to-Newsroom-CSU-Students-Strengthen-Local-Journalism.aspx

The program launched last year with support from the Center for Community News at the University of Vermont, who also helped the SUNY - The State University of New York system establish a community news program, and was recently awarded additional funding from the Lumina Foundation.

Currently, 17 CSUs are involved in the CA-CCN initiative, providing various opportunities for students to gain hands-on journalism experience, engage with local media organizations and contribute to their local news landscape.

The California Community News initiative connects journalism education with community reporting, giving students professional experience while helping local news outlets.

The latest data is in: CSU student success continues to grow. 🎓

Building on a decade of progress through the Graduation Initiative, the CSU is strengthening outcomes during this transitional year:

📈 More students are graduating in four years, with the rate reaching 39.6%.
📈 A higher share of transfer students are graduating in two years, reaching 46.6%.
📈 More students are staying on track, with 70.3% remaining enrolled or having graduated after three years.

These gains build momentum as we advance the CSU’s Student Success Framework and help more students reach graduation and thrive beyond it.
