The Louisa Police Department recognizes September 8, as the third annual 988 day, a national initiative led by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) to raise awareness of the 988 Su***de & Crisis Lifeline (988 Lifeline) and highlights the importance of prioritizing mental health and seeking help. 988 Day is a key part of the broader September focus on su***de prevention, mental health awareness and recovery.

What is 988? 988 gives all in Virginia access to free, one-on-one support, 24/7. Trained crisis support specialists are here to provide judgement-free, compassionate support and open the door to better days.

Our participation aims to remind those who are struggling that they are not alone. Anyone can call, text or chat 988 anytime, 24/7, to connect with a skilled, caring, and non-judgmental 988 counselor, who will listen, help with safety planning when needed and connect them with additional resources.

Maybe you just need someone to talk to, or maybe you need services and connections in your community. Whatever your situation, you deserve to feel heard and cared about anytime, anywhere.

Since its launch in July 2022, the 988 Lifeline has received and routed more than 26 million contacts via phone, text, and online chat, underscoring the real impact 998 has in meeting urgent emotional needs.

If alcohol is involved, have a plan before you head out.

✅Designate a sober driver.

✅Stay the night at a friend’s place.
✅Never get behind the wheel impaired.

A fun weekend can turn tragic in an instant. Make the responsible choice and get home safely.

The Louisa Police Department offers the following guidelines for motorists when approached by an emergency vehicle responding to an emergency call:

✅Pull to the nearest edge of the roadway and come to a complete stop until all emergency vehicles have passed.

✅Be alert to the approach of more than one emergency vehicle; from any direction. Be sure to check your rearview mirror and turn your head to double check before pulling back on the travel lane.

✅Keep the volume of your radio, phone or CB to a level that will not interfere with your ability to hear approaching emergency vehicles.

✅Use your turn signal when pulling off the road. This sends a message to the emergency vehicle operator that you are aware of their presence.

LPD also reminds motorists not to do the following when an emergency vehicle is approaching:

🚫Do not block any intersection - blocking intersections, even when attempting to yield to an emergency vehicle, is dangerous.

🚫Do not follow an emergency vehicle responding to an emergency closer than 500 feet -It's against the law.

🚫Do not stop on a bridge, curve or crest of a hill - Instead, activate your turn signal and proceed forward until you can safely pull over and come to a complete stop.

🚫Do not slam on your brakes or stop directly in front of an emergency vehicle - Large trucks require more stopping distance than passenger cars. Stopping abruptly in front of any large vehicle can have deadly consequences.

✅A simple move can make a
life-saving difference. A few moments of patience could help save a life

For tonight’s , the Louisa Police Department wants to remind everyone to stay alert and safe around railroad tracks during the 2026/2027 school year and beyond.

Back-to-school season means more new drivers on the road. Remind the new driver in your life:

🚆Never try to beat a train,
🚆Never stop on the tracks,
🚆Always expect a train to be present,
🚆 Get yourself (and any passengers, pets) out of the car and away from the tracks should your vehicle breakdown while crossing atop RR tracks. Call 911 and following instructions.

A quick conversation can help build safe habits for life.

🚆 Remember, tains can’t stop quickly and are often quieter than you think

Checkers 🏁 for surprising
the police department today with bringing our team lunch. There was A LOT of food, in very generous portions, so we paid it forward and shared with our TOL public works crew too 🚜

Your support of law enforcement is greatly appreciated! It is an honor to protect and serve the BEST citizens in such a supportive community 💙

🎒🚸 Tomorrow is the first day of school for Town of Louisa students heading back to Louisa County Schools. Back-to-school means more students will be walking to and from bus stops throughout the greater Louisa area. Both during the morning commute and the afternoon drop-off leading up to rush-hour (after school activities).

Today’s encourage all drivers to
stay alert and watch for pedestrians—especially throughout our greater rural roads, subdivisions, near schools, crosswalks and bus stops. Children and teens may be distracted by phones, headphones or conversations and may not always notice motor vehicle traffic.

Slow down, stay focused and help keep everyone safe this school year.
