We are proud to celebrate Melissa Herrera Miller, recipient of a 2026 Wine Society of Texas Scholarship Award.
Melissa is currently pursuing the Winemaking Certification Program (our 'sister' program) at Texas Tech University while advancing viticulture research in the Texas Hill Country. She recently established experiential grapevine plots in Jonestown, Texas, to evaluate site suitability and growing conditions for a future winery venture.

In addition to her studies, Melissa serves as an Assistant Professor of Instruction at the University of Texas, combining education, research, and industry innovation to support the future of Texas wine.

Congratulations, Melissa, on this well-deserved recognition!

Newsom Grape Day | April 24
Last Friday, the Texas wine and grape community gathered at Newsom Vineyards in Plains for another successful Newsom Grape Day, a long‑standing event that continues to support and strengthen viticulture across Texas.

Texas Tech University was proud to contribute to the program with two research‑focused presentations: Kirk Williams presented on Powdery Mildew Management, sharing practical approaches to protecting vineyard health. Dr. Mariam Berdeja presented on Soil and Root Microbiome: The Drivers of Healthy Vines, highlighting the role of soil biology in building resilient vines.

Congratulations to this year's TTU recipients of the Hoss Newsom Viticulture Scholarship:
Allie Goodwin
Rupesh Kaushik
Kamryn Riethmayer
Francisco Briseño
Shraddha Tomar

Thank you to the Newsom family for their continued generosity and leadership in hosting this event, and to Texas Wine & Grape Growers Association for supporting education, research, and the future of the Texas wine industry through Newsom Grape Day and the Hoss Newsom Scholarship.

It was a great day of learning, collaboration, and shared commitment to healthy vines and a thriving Texas wine industry.

The future of wine harvesting may already be in your vineyard.

Scientists at Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) have developed an AI-powered, handheld grape ripeness detector designed to help winemakers determine the exact moment grapes are ready to harvest.

The portable sensor, RipenAI, uses optical technology and machine learning to analyze how grapes absorb and reflect light - changes that naturally occur as fruit ripens. This allows growers to get instant, non-destructive insights directly in the vineyard, without relying on traditional lab testing or destructive sampling.

Researchers say the technology could allow winemakers to monitor the same grape clusters repeatedly throughout the ripening season, giving a more complete and accurate picture of harvest timing.

By combining AI with vineyard expertise, tools like this aim to improve efficiency, reduce waste, and support better quality wine in an industry where timing is everything.

Want to Learn More or Join the Pilot? They're looking for innovative vineyards and agritech partners to help shape the future of smart harvesting: https://ripenai.uk/ #
