πŸ’– Kim's Corner: My Guiding Stars – Bertha J. Flagg & Dr. Allene Demby Gayles

Today, as we continue to honor the phenomenal women who've illuminated our paths, I want to talk about two incredible members who truly shaped my early journey in AKA: Bertha J. Flagg and Dr. Allene Demby Gayles. These two women were my first graduate chapter mentors at Mu Xi Omega, and I am forever indebted to their wisdom and love.

Fresh out of college, I felt like I knew nothing. I still vividly remember my first committee meeting where I was asked to leave because my paperwork wasn't returned. I was so hurt, I sat in my car and just cried.
A few days later, a kind lady at the post office saw my key chain and asked if I was the new Sister in town who had come to the meeting. Shocked, I said yes and admitted I had lots of questions. This amazing woman, who I later learned was Charter President Bertha J. Flagg, told me her office was right upstairs, and to come see her when I was ready, documents in hand.

About an hour later, I walked through her door. She stopped everything, looked at me with a stunned face, and said, "I knew you would come, but I didn't think this quickly!" From that day on, she walked me through every single document, answered every question, and literally held my hand. She taught me so much about navigating our sisterhood.

Then there was Dr. Allene Demby Gayles. A graduate of my alma mater and from the same department, she became my "Mom away from home." Dr. Gayles knew everything and everybody! She was a professional and personal guide, even throwing me an engagement party. When I decided to enter my Ph.D. program, she was my steadfast advisor, connecting me with all the right people. She had a way of being both a mentor and a friend, even becoming friends with my own mom!

These two phenomenal women served as role models, surrogate mothers, and true friends. Both have gone on to be with the Lord, and not a day goes by that I don't think about their words of wisdom. I often wonder what they would think about my journey today. I miss them dearly, but their profound impact and unwavering support will forever live in my heart. Cara Payne Roberson

Today, I want to kick off a special segment in Kim's Corner where we shine a light on the incredible women who've shaped us. And for my very first one, it has to be the extraordinary woman who taught me everything: my incredible mother, Dorris A. Collins Smith.
Momma, you set the example for my sister and me with standards that, at times, felt unapologetically high. But now, as a wife and mother myself, I understand. Every single lesson about being a lady, about integrity, about strength – I learned from you. You truly are the woman I strive to be every single day.
I'll never forget being in elementary school, hearing a classmate say their mom was their best friend. I rushed home, asked you if we were best friends, and without missing a beat, you said, "ABSOLUTELY NOT. I am your Mother, not your friend." And you meant it!
Then, about a month before my wedding, as we walked out of church, you looked at me and said the words I never expected: "Now I can be your friend. If I had been your friend back then, I could not have raised you. Friends sometimes let you do what you want, mothers do not!"
That moment perfectly captured the immense sacrifice and the 'why' behind every lesson. I am so profoundly grateful for your unwavering example, your tough love, and the foundation you built for me. It’s a blessing to be able to give you your flowers while you’re here.
Thank you for everything, Momma. I love you! ❀ Jaycelyn Russ Antrice Smith

Hey everyone! πŸ‘‹ So thrilled to finally launch this new space. Think of it as a cozy corner dedicated to sharing my world with you – everything from what I find interesting and special moments to just a bit more about me. You might know me from elsewhere (Mt. Olive, Monticello, Alcorn, MSU, AKA, Non-Profit), but consider this your personal invitation to settle in.

I'm buzzing with ideas, especially for a recurring segment called Kim's Corner. This is where I'll be dishing out advice, insights, and maybe even celebrating some incredible women. It's a little peek into my mind, and I hope it becomes a vibrant spot for us to connect and grow together. I truly can't wait to start this journey with all of you. Stick around, drop a 'hi' in the comments below, and let's make this page a fun, inspiring community! ✨
