We are teaming up with Avian Medicine Club at KSU College of Veterinary Medicine for our last meeting of the year!

We have a very special guest joining us – Dr. Veronica Pardini will be presenting on her journey as a veterinarian from Brazil coming to the USA AND on some of her most interesting exotic medicine cases! Dr. Pardini will be joining us via zoom from South Florida – but dinner will be provided for those who wish to join us in T301 for the meeting.

Dr. Pardini is an associate veterinarian at Broward Avian and Exotic Animal Hospital and is working towards becoming an ACZM diplomate. She has been featured on National Geographic’s show “Dr. K’s Exotic Animal ER” and loves working with student externs (all years welcome to apply). Dr. Pardini was born and raised in Sao Paulo, Brazil where she graduated from veterinary school in 2012. She has since worked with many zoos in the USA and is a certified aquatic veterinarian (CertAqV) through the World Aquatic Veterinary Medical Association. She is also a current volunteer veterinarian at Zoo Miami. She was also recently featured on the Association of Avian Veterinarians (AAV) podcast: Docs of a Feather.

See you there!

Meet the LVMA K-State Faculty Advisor, Katherine KuKanich, DVM, PhD, DACVIM (SAIM). Dr. Kate KuKanich is an associate professor of small animal internal medicine and the director of the Veterinary Research Scholars Program. She is also involved in numerous outreach activities in Riley County and throughout Kansas, including “This is How We ROLE” which brings veterinary STEM lessons and mentorship to the Boys and Girls Club of Manhattan. She was the natural choice for a supportive, passionate, and involved faculty advisor!

“Hi, My name is Dr. Kate KuKanich. I grew up near Chicago and am a big Cubs fan! I went to Notre Dame for my undergraduate studies, and veterinary school in Minnesota, followed by an internship at Tufts and a residency/PhD in Knoxville TN. I have been on faculty at the College of Veterinary Medicine at Kansas State since 2008. During our free time, my husband and I are busy with our two sons, dog, cats, and barn full of ducks. I’m so excited to be a part of the LVMA at Kansas State, because it is a great platform to provide support and help grow our team of Latinx students, faculty, staff and allies, and to help better serve the Latinx clients within our communities.”

Meet the LVMA K-State Treasurer, Luke Rivas. Luke is a second year vet student at Kansas State University interested in small animal general practice and ownership. He was born and raised in Austin, Texas and is half Nicaraguan. He enjoys hanging out with friends, collecting sneakers, and spending time outdoors.

“Being at K-State for almost 2 years now, I’ve realized the opportunities we as a group can bring to under represented individuals in veterinary medicine. It is my hope that through our chapter of the LVMA we can bring unity, diversity of ideas, experiences, and people of different backgrounds into one of the best professions in the world.”

Meet the LVMA K-State Chapter Secretary, Cristina Márquez. Cristina is a first-year veterinary student at Kansas State University and is interested in specialty medicine—most likely neurology/neurosurgery or small animal surgery. She was born and raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico while her mother’s family is from Asturias, Spain. Cristina completed her bachelor’s degree at Creighton University, double majoring in neuroscience and biology. She is currently finishing her master’s degree at Kansas State University in Veterinary Biomedical Sciences and concurrently completing her DVM. On the weekends, she enjoys practicing yoga, working out, and spending time with her demanding cat, Blair.

“Growing up in the Caribbean, the Latinx culture provided the foundation to who I am. Today, I am proud to represent an organization where I get to celebrate diversity and inspire the next generation of Latinx veterinarians.”

Meet the LVMA K-State Chapter Co-President, Zara Martinez. Zara is a first year veterinary student at Kansas State University and is interested in exotic animal medicine and small animal emergency medicine. She was raised in Bartonsville, Pennsylvania and is Puerto Rican and Colombian. Zara completed her bachelor’s degree at Nova Southeastern University, double majoring in biology and marine biology. She then went on to complete a master’s degree at the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University in Conservation Medicine. She enjoys dancing, spending time with family and friends, and taking care of her kitten.

“Now that I am in the veterinary community, I see the lack of diversity and how this can impact our relationships with our clients and the future generation of veterinarians. I want to be able to show the younger generation that just because you look different or grew up differently, you can still achieve your dreams and that their diversity is important. The LVMA chapter here is important to aid our future clients, Latinx students and clinicians, as well as the younger generation who are interested in veterinary medicine.”

Bairon is a second year veterinary student at Kansas State University interested in exotic companion animal medicine and emergency medicine. He was raised in Miami, Florida and is half Ecuadorian, half Colombian. He enjoys gardening, hiking, working out, and taking care of all of his pets!

“I believe with my whole heart that being a veterinarian is the best job in the world. The diversity of species and career options speaks to that. Now, we need to make the active effort to promote and value that level of diversity among our veterinarians!”
