Stephen's Sunrise Pi Mile (5k Race)

Stephen's Sunrise Pi Mile (5k Race) Stephen's Sunrise Pi Mile 5K Run takes place on Saturday, October 20th, 2018 at the David YMCA in Jac On October 29th, 2010, Stephen S.

Fenstemaker II, was killed in a car accident while a student at Miami University. Stephen was a 2010 graduate of Jackson High School. As a student at Miami University, Stephen was majoring in math and statistics. To honor our son, we have created a Math Scholarship at Jackson and a Math/Science Scholarship at Louisville. Stephen was very active in both communities. Though he grew up in Jackson, he

swam for the Louisville YMCA and was a soccer referee in the Louisville community. We will have a 5k race on October 21st, 2017. The race will begin and end at the Paul & Carol David YMCA of Jackson Township and will be run in conjunction with the Jackson "Unity in the Community Pancake Breakfast"
All proceeds from the run will go to benefit the two memorial scholarships, both scholarships are for $4,000. Stephen was generous to all and in keeping with his life philosophy, the scholarships are needs based. Please join us for an early morning run through the beautiful Jackson parks and help support a worthy cause!

Today would have been Stephen's 29th birthday. We wish more than anything that he could be here to celebrate getting older with us. Stephen was a gift from the day he was born, making people laugh and brightening their days. We will forever love and miss him!

Thank you to everyone who has supported the race and the scholarship over the last ten years. Although we will no longer be holding Stephen's Sunrise Pi Mile, the funds raised in Stephen's name are still being used to assist students in need. We appreciate everything you all have done to help keep Stephen's memory alive and give us a silver lining to a tragic event.

Happy Birthday, Stephen!

Today marks 10 years since Stephen tragically passed away at the young age of 18. Not a day has gone by that we have not thought of you and missed you, Stevie. The world lost a truly exceptional person and we will forever grieve your loss. While no words can express our pain, perhaps it is best conveyed by the song, “Who You’d Be Today” by Kenny Chesney:

“It’s not fair, you died too young
Like a story that had just begun
But death tore the pages all away
God knows how I miss you
All the hell that I've been through
Just knowing no one could take your place
Sometimes I wonder who you'd be today

Would you see the world?
Would you chase your dreams?
Settle down with a family?
I wonder, what would you name your babies?

Sunny days seem to hurt the most
I wear the pain like a heavy coat
The only thing that gives me hope
Is I know I'll see you again someday”

Always in our hearts and on our minds

We would like to congratulate this year's scholarship recipient from Louisville High School, Hunter Vaught! Hunter will be attending The Ohio State University this fall in their scholar's program studying biology and veterinary medicine. Hunter will be receiving $1,000 per year for four years, totaling a $4,000 scholarship! We couldn't be happier that the scholarship is going to a student with such integrity and ambition (and he gave us the best thank you note EVER)! Good luck in your future, Hunter! Thank you to all of our supporters who made this scholarship possible!!

Each year on February 22nd, Stephen’s birthday, we announce the opening of registration for Stephen’s Sunrise Pi Mile. This year, however, we are announcing the end of our race. This was an emotionally difficult decision that we made together as a family after much contemplation. It seems fitting that this decision was made this year, as today marks 10 years since the last birthday we celebrated with Stephen.

We want to thank all of our supporters for your generosity, thoughtfulness, and assistance in helping us heal as a family after losing Stephen. With everyone’s support, we were able to raise over $75,000 in scholarship funds for students in need. This year, the 19th and 20th students will be receiving scholarships in Stephen’s name. None of these accomplishments would have been possible without our supporters, sponsors, and participants! Thank you!

Although the race is over, this is not the end of the scholarship foundation. We are looking into new avenues of raising scholarship funds and will keep everyone updated as decisions are made. Thank you again for everything you’ve done for our family!

Today is the ninth anniversary of Stephen’s passing. Though our hearts will forever be broken over the loss of such a wonderful person, we are thankful for everyone’s support of our race and scholarship foundation over the years. With your support and generosity, over $60,000 has been given to students in need in memory of Stephen.

If you knew Stephen, you knew his mom was his best friend! Here is Stephen pictured with his mother on our family’s last vacation together. This was just before we went horseback riding, where plenty of laughs were shared between us!

We miss you, Stevie!
