Trump wants to “clean, point, and paint” the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, even sharing renderings of its gray granite facade repainted white. The latest in a string of Trump-led tweaks to the White House complex, the EEOB makeover is now out for bids, with the President brushing off fears it’ll become a “big white blob.”

Stately dark brick home at 216 N. McNeil in the Evergreen Historic District falling victim to the sprayer. Such a shame to be losing the beauty and structural integrity of our historic architecture and the unique charm and character of our historic neighborhoods.

It’s very disappointing and frustrating to see that in spite of all of our calls and messages, painting continues on these beautiful and historic buildings on East Parkway. Thank you for your interest and concern for our historic architecture. Since there are few prohibitions in place to prevent this destruction and little enforcement of existing guidelines, all we can do at this point is try to raise awareness of the negative impact of painting historic masonry and encourage appropriate redevelopment. Again, thank you!

Kudos to the tenants of the endangered apartment buildings on East Parkway for sharing their plight as renters of the property and their preservation concerns with local media. Thank you to Kate Bieri for covering the story for Fox13 and for including the MMPS page in your report. Let’s hope getting the word out will help save these properties from further damage and encourage developers to end the practice of painting historic masonry buildings.

Several followers of the page have shared that at least two of these long-standing masonry apartment buildings on East Parkway just north of Central are in the process of being painted white. They stand directly across the parkway from Christian Brothers University. So far, only the rear of one building has been painted.

According to the Shelby County Assessor web site, the buildings were constructed in 1929 and are part of the Speedway Central Historic District. It is unknown if the buildings are protected by neighborhood guidelines in this district.

This is another case of an investor buying up a Memphis property and “renovating” with no concern for the historic fabric of our city! Please contact Oro and ask that they don’t damage the buildings by painting them and in the process erase our history with another generic, trendy paint job.

Glad to see renovation work has started on this long neglected, magnificent house at the corner of Madison and East Parkway. It looks like paint is being stripped off the trim work. Perhaps a good sign that the new owner will not be painting the original brick?
