Youth mental health is a growing national crisis, with an estimated 1 in 5 children needing mental health support during their lives. Dr. Alicia Barnes and our Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry are helping meet that need in Memphis through early intervention, community partnerships, and training the next generation of physicians.

By working alongside schools, hospitals, nonprofits, and families, this work is helping create stronger support systems and healthier futures for children across Tennessee.

"I'm someone who wants to make a physical impact in the lives of my patients. Surgery residency will have its challenges, but I am eager to learn new techniques from mentors and build relationships with my co-residents and people of the community who have entrusted me with their care."

For UTHSC College of Medicine Isaac Hembree, that commitment to community took root early. Volunteering at Erlanger in Chattanooga during high school and at UT Medical in Knoxville during undergrad, he began to understand what becoming a physician could really mean.

"I feel like those experiences strengthened my interest in becoming a physician by seeing how impactful I could become."

Now a graduating medical student at UT Health Sciences College of Medicine-Chattanooga, Hembree matched into a surgery residency in Chattanooga, the same city where his interest in medicine first began.

"I now get to achieve my goal in a place that is so important to me."

For Hembree, UT Health Sciences offered something few medical schools could: the chance to train across the state he wants to serve. Preclinical years in Memphis, clinical years back home in Chattanooga.

"It really encompasses how we are a statewide campus that offers so many learning opportunities across Tennessee. It was the perfect medical school for what I wanted to achieve, and I'm very grateful for my time as a student here."

Congratulations to Dr. Žak Ozmo on being named the inaugural Health & Wellness Award honoree at the Soulsville Foundation’s 2026 Power of Music Honors! As founder and CEO of the Ozmo Institute for Neuroaesthetics and Adjunct Assistant Professor in Anatomy and Neurobiology at UTHSC, Dr. Ozmo has spent decades proving through neuroscience that “music is not just sound. It’s human experience made audible.” His clinical work spans across PTSD, autism, pediatrics, and cancer care showing how music shapes things like memory, mood, immune response, and brain function. “Music doesn’t just entertain us it moves us.” 🎶

Congratulations to Dr. Colleen Hastings on her appointment as permanent chair of the Department of Physician Assistant Studies at The University of Tennessee Health Science Center. She has led the department since January 2025 and says her focus stays where it has always been: "supporting our students, strengthening our faculty, and ensuring that the clinicians we train are prepared to provide excellent care."

Her appointment comes at a pivotal moment as the program prepares to double its class size from 30 to 60 students with the new College of Medicine scheduled to open in June 2029.

Congratulations to Pooja Talati, one of our M3 College of Medicine students, who was recently selected as a featured platform speaker at the 2026 Pediatric Academic Societies Meeting in Boston!

Her research asks an important question: does government spending on public health programs actually lead to healthier babies? Pooja's findings show that addressing poverty and income inequality may matter just as much as the funding itself.

We are immensely proud of Pooja and her mentor Dr. Divya Rana for all of their hard work! 👏

The Tennessee General Assembly has approved $311 million in funding for a new College of Medicine Interdisciplinary Building on our Memphis campus.

The 275,000- to 300,000-square-foot facility will allow us to expand our medical school class from 175 to 250 students per cohort and grow the Physician Assistant Program from 30 to 60 students annually. Over its first five years, the building is projected to help graduate an additional 1,450 health care professionals, a direct response to Tennessee's projected need for 6,000 more physicians by 2030.

"I think this is one of those landmark events at a college of medicine," said UTHSC College of Medicine Executive Dean Michael Hocker, MD, MHS.
