Celebrating excellence in teaching and scholarship at Rhodes 🎓✨

At this year’s Awards Convocation, Evelyn Perry received the Clarence Day Award for Outstanding Teaching, and John Kaltner was honored with the Clarence Day Award for Outstanding Research and Creative Activity—two of the college’s highest faculty distinctions.

Known for her transformative, student-centered approach as a sociology professor, Dr. Perry challenges students to think deeply, engage creatively, and see themselves as agents of change. Meanwhile, Dr. Kaltner—an internationally recognized scholar of biblical studies and Qur’anic connections—has spent decades producing influential research that bridges disciplines and expands understanding.

Established by the Clarence Day Foundation, these awards recognize faculty who embody the very best of a Rhodes education—intellectual rigor, creativity, and a profound commitment to students and scholarship.

👏 Join us in congratulating these outstanding faculty members!

What’s the buzz??

Behind the soccer field in a sunny patch of campus lives a colony of bees, taken care of entirely by Rhodes students. @‌rhodesbeekeeping meets every week for hive inspections and even sells their own honey: the most local that a Lynx can get.

From Buenos Aires to Memphis, junior Lily Grace Richey is turning global experiences into real impact 🌍

As a Buckman International Scholar at Rhodes College, she interned with Global Planet of Children—supporting children and families through communications, outreach, and meaningful community work.

Back on campus, she’s continuing that impact at the National Civil Rights Museum.

“Opportunities are out there—you just have to be ready when they come.”

Dr. Stephen Haynes, professor of religious studies at Rhodes, is being recognized for a decade of meaningful impact beyond the classroom. He has received the 2026 Harold Love Outstanding Community Service Award—an honor presented by the Tennessee Higher Education Commission to individuals across the state who demonstrate exceptional commitment to public service. The award highlights those creating lasting change in their communities—and Haynes’ work is a powerful example.

As founder and director of Rhodes’ Liberal Arts in Prison Program, Haynes has helped bring education to incarcerated women at the Women’s Therapeutic Residential Center in Henning, TN. Since 2016, the program has engaged 40+ faculty and 80+ students as teachers, mentors, and advocates—expanding access to learning and opportunity.

With new support from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the program is growing even more with the launch of a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies and expanded offerings across West Tennessee.

Join us in celebrating this well-deserved recognition. 👏

A place like no other. ✨🌳

The Spence Wilson Center for Interdisciplinary Humanities hosts Robert Macfarlane for a free public lecture at Rhodes College on Thursday, October 1 (6pm, McNeill Concert Hall). Macfarlane is Professor of Literature and the Environmental Humanities at the Faculty of English in Cambridge. He is well-known as a writer about nature, climate, landscape, people, and place, and his books—which include Is a River Alive? (2025), Underland (2019), Landmarks (2015), The Old Ways (2012), and Mountains of the Mind (2003)—have been translated into more than thirty languages, won prizes around the world, and been widely adapted for music, film, television, radio, and theatre. Is a River Alive? is a joyful, mind-expanding exploration of an ancient, urgent idea: that rivers are living beings who should be recognized as such in imagination and law. It is also an account of three unforgettable journeys teeming with extraordinary people, stories, and places. This event is free and open to the public, but attendees must pre-register using this link: https://fs22.formsite.com/webmanagerrhodesedu/muajlptegz/index
