UMN Sustainable Systems Management Club

UMN Sustainable Systems Management Club The Sustainable Systems Management Club strives to increase students' knowledge on sustainability, sharpen their business acumen, and expand their network.

This student group is open to all U of M students interested in the sustainability industry or in the Sustainable Systems Management major. We focus on increasing students' sustainable knowledge, sharpening their business acumen, expanding their network with companies in our industry, and building relationships with each other and SSM alumni. We strive to prepare our members to positively impact t

he sustainable industry by equipping them with a competitive edge in the studies of energy efficiency, sustainability, and renewable resources. Our principal activities include monthly meetings to discuss the progress and direction of our efforts in influencing the sustainable use of renewable products and networking with business professionals. We have professionals of the sustainable industry speak to our group, as well as field trips to various companies in the industry. We help students build relationships with businesses in our industry, giving them possible future job opportunities. We also educate and inform others about the sustainable industry, and raise awareness of the Sustainable Systems Management major offered at the University of Minnesota. In addition, the SSM Club is dedicated to promoting energy efficiency, eco-friendly products, and sustainability. The SSM Club is an academic and educational group due to its close relationship with the Sustainable Systems Management major, and its focus is on providing the members with knowledge and business skills that are necessary for success in the sustainable industry. If you are interested in becoming a member of the SSM Club, or learning more about our group, please email Srijana Balasundar at [email protected]. She can let you know about our upcoming meetings and events.

Check this out! Kenya is now the 10th African country to ban plastic bags. The more than 100 million bags that are used annually gather in water which is contaminating it. This decisive action to ban plastic bags is praised by the UN. Let's keep this movement going in America!

"This decision is a major breakthrough in our global effort to turn the tide on plastic." — Erik Solheim, UN Environment

It is saddening that the Legislature has blocked the plastic bag ban in Minneapolis. This would have been a huge step in making the City of Minneapolis and the State of Minnesota a more sustainable place to live. There are so many bags that are recycled incorrectly and it can pose so many threats to the environment. Overall, the effects are not clear, but in no way will this decision from the Legislature hinder our efforts to reduce the use!!

The ordinance banning plastic bags was supposed to go into effect June 1.

People for years have been reusing plastic bags, but it ultimately just prolongs their life before they end up in a landfill.

Businesses and community groups in Duluth (Yes, in the GREAT state of Minnesota!!) have formed an alliance to ban plastic bags and foam food containers called "Bag it, Duluth - For the Love of Place."

Check out this quick read for more information on this proposal!
