The IDEELab at Mississippi State University's Hall School of Mechanical Engineering was honored to host two U.S. Navy admirals and members of the Navy's prestigious Naval Nuclear Propulsion Officer Candidate (NUPOC) Program for the university’s inaugural Navy Day Expo. This event, a collaboration between IDEELab and the U.S. Navy NUPOC Program, provided an exciting opportunity for our Mechanical Engineering students to engage with Vice Adm. Robert Gaucher and Rear Adm. Melvin Smith. The admirals introduced students to the Navy’s NUPOC program and explored cutting-edge defense technology at an exhibition near Davis Wade Stadium. We are grateful to the U.S. Navy for their support in shaping the leaders of tomorrow through meaningful engagement with our students.

The Purple Shaft of Excellence has a long-standing history with the Hall School of Mechanical Engineering and will continue to be awarded by the senior class each May.

Beginning with the Tau Nu Chapter of Pi Tau Sigma, the award strives to annually award a faculty member who strove to invest in student futures.

The M.E. Senior Class of 2024 resurrected this tradition after 21 years of dormancy, and the trophy will continue to be awarded every spring. Graduating seniors will have the opportunity to vote in the fall and spring of the school year for an outstanding faculty member.

Previous winners of this trophy include Dr. Keith Hodge and Dr. William Jones, who were happy to see it return. Dr. Jones said that the award is given to a professor who "expects a lot and cares a lot."

Each component holds a special significance, as outlined by the Tau Nu Chapter:
- The block of hardwood represents the students receptivity.
- The keyway symbolizes the interlocking ideals of the faculty and students.
- The taper represents the expansion of ideas through learning.
- The throw signifies the transition of knowledge from faculty to student.
- The gear symbolizes the strength of purpose of the faculty.
- The screw threads indicate the channels through which this purpose is accomplished.

Thank you to the M.E. Senior Class of 2024 for bringing this tradition back to life and we look forward to all the future faculty who will be recognized!

Last week, our students were initiated into the Order of the Engineer and now showcase their integrity and responsibility to the engineering profession through a stainless steel ring!

Originating from the aftermath of the 1907 Quebec Bridge disaster, engineers resolved to create a ceremony for young engineers to instill the awesome responsibility they have towards public health and safety.

The "Order of the Engineer" in the United States was formed after the Canadian "Ritual of the Calling of an Engineer." It intends to bridge the gap between training and practice, and to present a public visible symbol identifying the engineer's dedication.

Our students now wear the ring proudly to be reminded of their great responsibility of upholding public safety.
