WVU ASDA

WVU ASDA ASDA is a national student-run organization that protects and advances the rights, interests, and welfare of students pursuing careers in dentistry.

All of West Virginia University's dental students are members of our local ASDA chapter. The American Student Dental Association (ASDA) is a national student-run organization that protects and advances the rights, interests, and welfare of students pursuing careers in dentistry. It introduces students to lifelong involvement in organized dentistry and provides services, information, education, rep

resentation and advocacy. The objective of this group is to be a common place that WVU ASDA members can go to find current information for our growing chapter. ASDA allows dental students to have one united voice. ASDA members discuss and pass resolutions/policies at our annual session.

Happy Veterans Day to all our faculty and students in the military!! Thank you for your service to our country and to our profession!!

Mark Alan Gilkerson (D3) pictured with his Marine Corp unit said, “I have fond memories of my time in the Marine Corps. It gave me many of the habits and skills that I value, and I feel that my past experiences from the service aid me now in dental school. Like dental school, in the military you form very close bonds with the people you work with, learn to step outside you comfort zone, and get to experience new and unique things that many people never will. It’s a privilege to have been involved with both, and I wouldn’t trade the experience for anything.”

“My dental school experience has shaped me in ways that I did not expect. My experience has taught me that victories are incredibly rewarding but the setbacks and mistakes are probably what I learned from the most. Our dental school is unique in that our professors truly care about our success and wellbeing and for that, I am so grateful. The tight knit family that we have here has shaped my experience by reassuring me to give myself some grace on the hard days and count even the smallest of victories as a noteworthy accomplishment. After speaking with students from other schools at ASDA conferences, it is evident that our professors strive to mold us into the best clinicians both academically and clinically. While perseverance does not award you a letter grade, it translates to so much more... so on the really hard days when you just want to scream or cry... don’t give up... persevere. The journey is worth all the hard work and effort.

ASDA has strengthened my sense of community here at the school and throughout District 6. By attending conferences, my classmates and I had the opportunity to network with students from different schools, vendors from all over the country, dental professionals and financial planners. We heard some of the most inspiring talks at these conferences and always left a conference feeling energized and excited about the profession we have chosen.

I’m not quite sure I can pick just ONE fact I love about ASDA because I am incredibly passionate about every facet of it, but I will say that it is an organization that has allowed my classmates (my best friends) and I to unite to advocate for the common good of our profession and patients. Does it get much sweeter than that? I cannot think of a more perfect ending for my dental school education than to be surrounded by my peers and faculty members who not only make me better but also inspire me. Thank you, ASDA—you’ve made my social media game so much stronger and my heart even bigger!” - Paru Gopalan, DDS

“My dental school career would not have
been the same if I hadn’t been involved
in ASDA. ASDA offered the opportunity to strengthen friendships within our school and well as the opportunity to network with dental students across the nation. I learned the importance of being involved in organized dentistry and what a positive impact we can have as a united voice. I feel immensely grateful for my experience as a dental student at WVU SOD. Attempting to sum up all of the experiences during the last four years that have shaped me into the person I am today, is a difficult task. The most important lessons are to give your best each day and never stop learning. I have made so many wonderful friendships while I have been enrolled. Graduating is bittersweet. Following graduation, I will be moving back to my hometown and practicing as an associate in Charlottesville, VA.” - Elizabeth Strickler, DDS

“My favorite part of ASDA was the networking opportunities that it presented. Attending conferences all over the country and meeting so many people with common goals is so incredibly empowering. It motivated me to get involved, to advocate for our profession, to use my voice! ASDA fever is REAL! And I cannot wait until student’s are able to attend conferences again so they can experience the passion that comes from a long weekend with ASDA!! It has truly enhanced my dental school experience in ways that I never anticipated. I cannot express enough how much love I have for this organization! Following graduation, I am moving to Charlotte, NC where I will be an associate in private practice!

Dental school has taught me A LOT. I learned a lot about dentistry, of course, but beyond that it also taught me what it meant to work as a team, to be a good friend, to be a mentor, and so much more. I learned the value of hard work, sound judgement and a good night’s rest. The relationships that I have gained along this journey have been absolutely priceless, and I couldn’t be more grateful. Reflecting on my time here as a student, I find it incredibly hard to believe that it is all coming to a close. My advice to any student still on this journey, no matter how much time you may have left, would be to get involved and soak it all in, because before you know it you’ll be like me.. typing this and crying while reflecting on all things ASDA and dental school!” - Dr. Brooke Dolin, DDS

The ADA collaborates with the state and ASDA chapter leaders to host National Signing Day (NSD). It signifies the transition from ASDA member to ADA member! Following graduation the ADA offers an 18 month FREE membership and this bridges the gap from a D4 student membership to an ADA practicing dentist membership. Cheers to the Class of 2021 on becoming hASDA-beens!! 🦷🥳
