On Monday, Columbia Journalism students taught a journalism workshop at Lincoln Hospital to incredible young people in the Guns Down, Life Up program (). Students spent the afternoon teaching the basics of journalism, practicing interview exercises, looking at examples of impactful reporting, and talking about what it means to be a thoughtful and responsible journalist in 2026. During the workshop, it was inspiring to see the curiosity in the room and how quickly everyone jumped into asking great questions.
Guns Down, Life Up is a Bronx-based nonprofit that supports young people impacted by gun violence through mentorship, education, and community support. In New York City, more than a third of shooting incidents occur in the Bronx, where youth account for 42% of the city’s young shooting victims, according to DA Darcel Denise Clark.
Gun violence remains one of the most painful and persistent challenges facing communities across the country, which makes initiatives like this so important. By creating spaces to break the cycle of trauma for learning, mentorship, and opportunity, the program helps them build new paths and futures.
