Program in Latin American, Iberian and Latino Cultures (LAILaC) at The Graduate Center is committed to preparing students to become rigorous and creative scholars in a diverse spectrum of fields of inquiry on Latin American and Iberian cultures. LAILaC also offers an active program of academic, cultural, and literary activities, all located in the heart of Manhattan at the intersection of Fifth Av

enue and 34th Street. As a part of The Graduate Center, a unique institution devoted primarily to doctoral studies and committed to excellence, diversity and innovative research, LAILaC participates in The Graduate Center’s mission of drawing upon and contributing “to the complex communities of New York City and beyond."

Q***r Spanishness: Neo-Folkloric Music beyond Rosalía in Contemporary Peninsular Culture

Since El mal querer (2018), Rosalía has sparked a wave of artists across the Iberian Peninsula who are reimagining folklore through innovative sounds. In this talk, Daniel Valtueña explores “folktrónica” and its connection to the post-2008 identity crisis.

Featuring artists like Maria Arnal i Marcel Bagés, Baiuca, Rodrigo Cuevas, Verde Prato, Guitarricadelafuente, Ángeles Toledano & Lagartijas del Guadiana.

From tradition to “transnations,” these projects rethink identity, community, and respond to today’s global challenges—from sustainability to AI.
