How might dietary fat influence the spread of colorectal cancer?

New research led by Swagata Goswami, Ph.D., of Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Montefiore Einstein Comprehensive Cancer Center has identified a possible mechanism.

In mouse models, a high-fat diet increased levels of ceramides—fat molecules found naturally in cells. The higher levels activated YAP, a protein that regulates cell growth and tissue repair, and shifted some cancer stem cells into a regenerative state linked to liver metastasis. Blocking ceramide production reduced metastases without affecting the size of the primary tumors.

Published in Science, the findings point to potential new ways to prevent or limit cancer spread. More research is needed to determine whether this process can be safely targeted in people with colorectal cancer.

Ahead of World Mental Health Day, the Einstein Student Mental Health Center Advisory Board has brought our community together through a week of wellness events—including an Uncertainty Panel with Einstein principal investigators on navigating the unknowns in science and research careers, and Thursday’s Wellness Fair. 💚

At the fair, members of the Einstein community filled in the blank: “Wellness is
”

Their answers remind us that wellness can take many forms: asking for help, spending time with loved ones, acknowledging our growth, supporting one another, reading a good book, and making time for the things we enjoy.

Swipe through to see what wellness means to members of our community.

đŸŸ A little pause, a lot of paws!

At Paws & Decompress, Einstein students took a breather from their busy schedules to spend time with some very good dogs! Hosted by the Einstein Student Mental Health Center Advisory Board as part of a week of wellness events, the gathering made room for rest, connection, and plenty of tail wags. đŸ’™đŸ¶

Ahead of World Mental Health Day on October 10, we’re celebrating the small moments that support student well-being on campus.

Congratulations to Michael Berney, Ph.D., associate professor of microbiology & immunology, on receiving a Mathers Foundation Award.

The three-year, $698,928 grant will support his lab’s research into how Mycobacterium tuberculosis—the bacterium that causes tuberculosis (TB)—rapidly and reversibly rearranges its genome in response to the types of nutrients available to them. The findings could offer new insight into how the bacterium persists in the body and may ultimately inform strategies to prevent or treat persistent TB.

It’s National Postdoc Appreciation Week!

Held each September by the National Postdoctoral Association, NPAW recognizes the incredible contributions postdoctoral researchers make to science and discovery. This year’s theme celebrates 150 years of the postdoc position in the United States.

At Einstein, postdoctoral researchers are advancing science across the college: studying HIV prevention for adolescents and young adults, using computer simulations to reveal how proteins move and change shape, tracing the ways early-life food insecurity affects the brain and metabolism, and much more. Their important work deepens our understanding of disease and opens new paths towards treating it. This week, and every week, we’re grateful for them.

Swipe to meet a few of the 27 postdocs featured in this year’s “Meet the Researcher” showcase from the Belfer Institute for Advanced Biomedical Studies, and see the full showcase at https://bit.ly/3Th3Klw

For the third consecutive year, Albert Einstein College of Medicine has been named a 2026 Great College to Work ForÂź.

Einstein earned recognition in three areas: professional development; faculty experience; and inclusion, belonging, and community. This distinction reflects the voices of the people who make Einstein a great place to work and learn.

We’re grateful to our faculty, postdoctoral fellows, students, and staff for advancing science, medicine, and education while strengthening our community every day.

On the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, we remember those who were lost and honor the first responders, survivors and families forever changed by that day.

In this excerpt from Lifeline: A Doctor’s Commitment to 9/11 First Responders, the wife of retired FDNY Captain Al Fuentes recalls Dr. David Prezant’s compassion and consistent communication while he cared for her husband. Dr. Prezant, FDNY chief medical officer and an Einstein professor, reflects on what it means to earn a family’s trust in a moment of crisis.
