Shaun has a lot going on; when she’s not covering a Debating Society’s debate, she writing about about it, once that’s done, she works on school assignments. She’s keeping up, but only barely. Last week she asked for 2 extensions; one from her Shakespeare professor and the other from Prof Gerrick, who has a soft spot (well not sure if ‘soft’ is the right word) for Shaun. The truth is, Shaun found what she loves: writing. She consistently submits stellar articles that get noticed. Sosi, the editor of The City Sun, promised her a byline if Shaun proved herself, and she did. After covering four debates and writing exceptional articles, Sosi asked Shaun to investigate a developing story; the Women in Leadership Association is trying to stop some engineering students from calling their next pub bash, ‘Horny Little Devil Bash.’ WILA wants them to change the name, citing that it encourages bad behavior. The engineers don’t see a problem with the name. She has already reached out to WILA and set up a few interviews. The engineering students haven’t responded yet. That won’t stop Shaun. She wants to write a fair and balanced article, representing both sides. Thoughts??

The debate ended earlier than Shaun thought and she was pretty impressed with her note taking abilities so she decided she’s get a beer at A-plus before going back to the dorm to work on her article. She knew she’d find Andrew working. They chatted at the bar while he served clients. Shaun wanted to talk up Katie. He nodded politely before telling her he was kind of into someone else. But Shaun barely heard him because at the very second Professor Gerrick walked in. Shaun made a stupid excuse, not even noticing Andrew’s hurt feelings and walked toward her teacher. The chemistry between them was so obvious, if anyone cares to notice...which of course I did and it’s not good. Anyway, Professor Gerrick hadn’t intended on staying at A-plus; he was meeting some friends and moving on to a club off campus. But the friends were a no show and at 3:00am he and Shaun, along with a scattering of others were asked to leave. Shaun practically skipped back to her dorm. She likes her Professor and I’d be crazy to think he didn’t like her... this is BAD!!! Really bad. Where do you think this is going to go? Do you think Shaun has the maturity to walk away from this potentially dangerous situation? Will Prof Gerrick do something so stupid as to destroy his career? Tell me what you think.

It’s been a few interesting days. The A on Shaun’s Critical Thinking paper was the start. Shaun was over the moon and half way to the sun, and when Shaun is over the moon and half way to the sun, she does things...sometimes sane things and sometimes insane things. Today Shaun decided to quit the book club, that she’s yet to participate in, and decided to get involved with the school paper, The City Sun. She wants a byline. Imagine. She didn’t get it, but she made Sosi, the Editor in Chief, promise to give her a few articles to prove herself. Her first assignment is to cover the Debating Panel’s debate this evening. Not what Shaun wanted, but it’s a start. Not sure if that’s sane or insane with all the work piling up. Her other ‘thing’ happened last night when she realized that Andrew, Matthew’s brother and the bartender at A-plus is in engineering. She realized Andrew is Drew. So she decided to talk up Katie. Why not. Not sure how sane or insane that is. Can anything bad come out of either of these decisions? I think not. But if you want to speculate, please do. I’d love to hear it.

It was a great day. Remember those papers Shaun had to write a few weeks back? Well, she got two of them back today. She got a B on her Satire paper and an A, yes an A, on her Critical Thinking paper. That was a surprise. Shaun wasn’t expecting that, and frankly neither was I.... I mean, could her paper be that good. Critical Thinking is not her best class; she’s been struggling with it from day one. I guess the notes Professor Gerrick gave her were good. But were they too good? ‘Inappropriately good’... I shutter (if I could) to think. Shaun is so thrilled she asked Katie to go celebrate. Unfortunately, Katie is swamped with work. So Shaun’s off to A-plus on her own, hoping to see someone there she knows.

Despite another rambling message from Dylan imploring Shaun to call him in order to strategize about how to tell Sophie about their affair, AND save both relationships, Shaun had a great day. She had her second meeting with her professor and decided he wasn’t only cute but supportive and sweet, too. After going over practically everything he covered in class, he handed Shaun notes so she could study them over the next day or two since they won’t meeting again before the paper is due.
And the cherry on top of her day was seeing Katie in a great mood after taking it upon herself to decorate the kitchen and seemingly forgiving Shaun for not doing it. They had a great chat over their first meal in the dorm. Shaun went on and on about how great Professor Gerrick turned out to be, and Katie told her about a crush she has on a Engineering student named, Drew. That last bit may be the reason for her great mood. So Shaun decided to call Dylan and promised him, if he waited until they were all home at thanksgiving, she’d agreed to telling Sophie. Thanksgiving is still a while away and Shaun is sure by then Dylan will have moved on from this silly idea.

Pirates of Penzance has plenty of musical numbers. Anyone who’s auditioning should know. Not Shaun. She never even bothered familiarizing herself with the show. So when J.J, who was probably the director, called on Shaun to sing, she was terrified. There were about 20 people in the room and now she was stuck having to singing front of them. She climbed onto the stage and approached the microphone. Music for a song she had never heard before began to play. She stood there frozen. After, what seemed like forever, she bolted from the stage and out the door. Humiliation trailed her like a bad stench.
All that would have been bad enough, but remember she had a meeting with her professor. Ashamed and mortified, Shaun began crying almost immediately and told him all about the audition. When she finally regained some composure, she apologized for her rambling and got up to leave. Professor Gerrick must be the nicest teacher because he gave Shaun an extension and told her to come back when she was feeling better. He promised to answer all her questions and help with the paper. And for the second time Shaun noticed that Professor Gerrick was really cute.

Shaun didn’t want to get out of bed this morning. She finished and submitted two essays but is still struggling with her critical thinking paper. She’s examining the system of literature and its evolution since Aristotle. This class has been a thorn in her side since day one. Finally, just after 11am, she dragged herself to the kitchen and ate cereal straight from the box. Half way through the box she decided to make an appointment with Professor Gerrick, her Critical Thinking teacher. They agreed on meeting at his office at 445pm on Monday, the same day as her Pirate of Penzance audition. She plans on going to the audition at 4pm, which won’t be more than 30 minutes. Her appointment with her teacher won’t take more than an hour. That leaves her all night to bang out the 8-10 pages for Tuesday.

Finally, just after 11am,she dragged herself to the kitchen and ate cereal from the box. Half way through the box she decided to make an appointment to speak to her teacher, Prof Gerrick. He could only see her at 445pm on Monday, which is the same day as the Pirates of Penzance audition. She’ll go to the audition at 4pm which won’t take more than 30 minutes, she figures. Then she’ll have the rest of the night to hammer out 8-10 pages for Tuesday.

Remember when I said ‘guilt is a silencer’ back when camp was coming to an end?? (August 10 post) Well, it turns out guilt is so much more. This is a care package Shaun just put together for Sophie: a City University hoodie, beer mug, and an old photo of the two of them, which Shaun just printed. So is guilt also a motivator? But motivated to do what? Manipulate? Sure looks that way.
What else does guilt make us do??
