This rare photograph captures the only known image of the “Black Cats,” the men of Beta Kappa Sigma at Wilberforce University. Known informally as the “Black Cat Club,” the group existed to foster camaraderie and good times among its members. They would gather in informal spaces—often in the attic room of a member's home—where friendship, laughter, and shared experience defined their bond.
Although never officially recognized or incorporated by the university, the Black Cat Club played a pivotal role in student life at Wilberforce during its time. It served as a meaningful social outlet in an era when formal organizations were limited, offering a space for self-expression and brotherhood outside institutional structures.
Importantly, this club laid the groundwork for future student organizations. As an early, unofficial precursor to Greek life on campus, the Black Cats helped shape the cultural and social legacy that later fraternities would build upon at Wilberforce University.
