In this "Bring Your Own Equipment" class, you will learn as you repair. It is designed for individuals who want to learn how to diagnose, maintain, and repair small engine equipment. This class serves as an introduction to Small Engine Repair, or as a skills practice session for those who have already taken our Small Engine Certification class. Students are encouraged to bring their own equipment, such as lawn mowers, chainsaws, or trimmers, to work on during instructor-guided sessions.

This class prepares students for the required NC Notary Public exam. To become a notary, you must be 18 years of age, have a high school diploma or GED, and pass the test given at the end of class. The Avery Campus of Mayland Community College would like to highlight one of our students who embraced a new experience, which has become her passion. Enjoy this quick Q&A with Sharon Matney.

What drew you to the quilting class at MCC?
After trying several different hobby classes at MCC, Sharon discovered that the quilting class was something she truly enjoyed and wanted to continue pursuing. She found quilting especially engaging and quickly became interested in the wide variety of ideas, patterns, and creative designs that could be produced. This strong interest motivated her to remain committed to the class.

Did you have any quilting experience before taking the class?
Sharon shared that she had no prior experience with quilting before enrolling in the class. She described herself as a complete beginner and noted that she did not even know how to operate a sewing machine at the time.

What is your favorite part of the class?
Her favorite aspect of the class is the opportunity to learn new techniques and explore different design concepts. She explained that the instructor introduces a wide range of projects beyond traditional quilts, which keeps the class engaging and dynamic. Sharon also values the sense of community, expressing that she enjoys spending time with classmates and learning alongside them.

We understand that you have started selling the quilting projects you create. How did you get started, and how is that going?
Sharon explained that she began accumulating a number of smaller quilted items, such as bags and sunglasses cases, and realized she needed to find a way to share or sell them. She researched local shops that support handmade goods and connected with store owners about selling her items on commission. She currently has some of her work displayed at Mountain Dog Coffee and has previously sold tote bags in Blowing Rock. At this time, she has paused her sales efforts to focus on a new venture she recently launched with her husband—a Patchwork quilting app.

What would you tell someone considering taking a quilting class? Sharon encourages others to “just try it,” emphasizing that it is difficult to know whether you will enjoy something until you give it a chance. She noted that even for those who feel nervous or uncertain, the instructor and fellow students provide strong support, making the learning environment welcoming and approachable for beginners.

Is there anything you would like to add?
Sharon shared information about her new app, called Patchwork Studio (patchworkstudio.app). The app was designed to help quilters create their own patterns based on the art of patchwork. Users can design custom layouts, select fabric colors, and share their creations with others in the quilting community. She emphasized that the app is intended to be user-friendly and accessible for quilters of all skill levels.

In this class, students will use pressed leaves, acrylic paint, and a gelatin plate for creating beautiful works of monoprint art suitable for framing, scrapbooking, or making greeting cards. Students will collect leaves. All other equipment and materials provided.

Make and give your own hand-made Christmas ornaments to loved ones and friends. Join our Blacksmithing Instructor, Mr. Levi King, as he guides you through this 6-hour class. You will leave with a beautifully forged ornament and some new blacksmithing skills. Please note that this class does involve hammering and bending metal.

Learn how to create original mosaics using stained glass and upcycled materials. Each student will learn the process and will take away at least 1 unique mosaic of their own design utilizing scrap stained glass, with the option to include a variety of other upcycled materials such as pieces of jewelry, charms, buttons, pebbles, wire, etc. All tools and materials will be provided. No experience needed.

Chainmaille Earrings with Lynn McKinney

Learn the basics of creating beautiful Chainmaille jewelry while assembling 3-4 pairs of beautiful earrings. Jewelry pliers and materials will be provided. Leave class with a set of dangling leaves, graduated circles, and shaggy loops earrings. Students may purchase additional materials for extra sets of earrings if desired. Class size is limited to 10 students.

Class will be held at the Avery Learning Center of Mayland Community College.
Cost of class is $55 and includes your supplies.
