Some schools will pay to get your kid. Most families never find out which ones.

Here's the thing nobody explains. Colleges are buying a class. They have shape targets, gaps to fill, and money set aside to fill them. A student who fills a gap is worth real dollars to that school.

Which means the same student is worth different amounts at different schools. Not slightly different. Sometimes tens of thousands a year different.

So how do you find the schools that would compete for your student?

You look at where your student sits in the applicant pool, not where the school sits on a ranking list. Top quarter of the pool at a school that wants what your kid has? That's where the money is. Bottom quarter at a school everyone's applying to? That's where you pay full price and feel grateful for the privilege.

You look at what the school is actively trying to build. Programs they're growing. Regions they want. Majors they're funding.

And you look at their actual discount behavior, not their marketing.

I've asked hundreds of parents this and the answers cluster into four:

A. We won't be able to afford the school she gets into.
B. He's going to get rejected everywhere that matters.
C. We're already behind and I don't know what we missed.
D. We'll pay for it and it'll cost us our retirement.

I don't lead with those numbers often, because a number without a story is just a number. So here's the story behind it.

None of that money showed up because a family got lucky in April. It showed up because somebody asked the right questions early enough for the answers to still matter. Which schools want this student. What will each one actually cost. Where is the merit money and what does it take to win it. What are we doing this year that changes next year's number.

Fifteen questions, roughly. Most parents can answer two or three.

The ones you can't answer are usually the ones costing you the most.

"We make $250,000. Is there any point in filing FAFSA?" I get this one weekly.

Short answer: yes, file it.

Longer answer, and this is the part that matters. A lot of merit scholarships require a FAFSA on file even though they're not need-based. Some schools won't consider you for institutional money without it. You can be handed a scholarship that has nothing to do with income and still lose it because a form wasn't filed.

It's also free, and it takes under an hour now.

The families who skip it are usually the ones who assume the answer instead of checking it. That assumption has cost people real money.

A 60-point score bump turned into $18,000 a year. Here's the math nobody shows you.

Most families think about test scores as an admissions thing. Get in or don't. That's the whole frame.

That frame is costing you money.

At a lot of schools, merit scholarships are tiered. Hit one score band and you get a certain award. Hit the next band and the award jumps. Not by a little. Sometimes by five figures a year.

So the question isn't ""s my kid's score good enough to get in." The question is "what's the next tier at the schools on our list, and how far away are we."

Sometimes the answer is 60 points. Sometimes that's one summer of focused prep.

Run it as a return calculation. If prep costs you a few hundred dollars and moves your student into a tier worth $18,000 a year, that's $72,000 over four years. You will not find a better use of a summer.

And if the answer is that prep won't move the needle for your student, you deserve to know that too, before you spend the money.
