December 1st is not a suggestion.

That is the competitive scholarship deadline at the University of Louisville for the MLK Scholars Program, the McConnell Scholars Program, and the Grawemeyer Scholarship.

Missing it does not close the door entirely — but it narrows it significantly. Competitive merit scholarships are awarded on a rolling basis. Early applicants get priority consideration for the largest awards. Financial aid packages are stronger when submitted before the deadline.

There is a program called the Border Benefit that can save families from six states roughly $16,000 a year in tuition. Before any merit money. And the two can stack.

Every student fills it out. Not everyone fills it out well.

The academics section asks for specific information in a specific way — and it's one of the places families most often rush or miss something the first time through.
