In honor of , the Minnesota Department of Health shared a story from Naidine Villa, who recently completed her associate degree with support from the NCCC: Northfield Community College Collaborative.

From professors who gave her the flexibility she needed to succeed both as a parent and student to advisors that helped her navigate local and statewide resources, Naidine found more than just academic support at Northfield, she found a community. “I had people on my side who were my cheerleaders,” she says. “They believed in me even on days I didn’t believe in myself.”

To other parenting students, she offers this advice: “Share your truth. Don’t be ashamed for taking steps to better yourself. Even a short pep talk from someone can make all the difference.” Naidine’s story is one of resilience, community, and hope – a reminder that with the right support, it’s never too late to begin again.

College affordability and the availability of child care are two main obstacles face in . This month is a time to shine a spotlight on how access to child care, basic needs programs, and improved data collection can help support them. Recently NCCC: Northfield Community College Collaborative received a Student Parent Support Initiative grant, which enables them to provide access to free onsite childcare during classes and stipends for off-site childcare. At HCI we are dedicated to tackling barriers to education like this, one step at a time.

September is traditionally back-to-school season, and it is also National Student Parent Month! Did you know that NCCC has added a lactation pod to the wide range of resources available to our students? This private space for nursing or pumping will increase the accessibility of higher education for parents. Staff and visitors to the NCRC are also welcome to use the pod when privacy for lactation is preferred.
