Thanks to this green-thumbed crew Deering Hall has new entry landscaping!

Hannah Ward and Michael Howland, undergraduate students enrolled in the School of Food and Agriculture’s University of Maine Environmental Horticulture program, were awarded the Barrett Work Merit Grant to cleanup Deering Hall's entry garden and redesign the space with new plantings, pathways and seating areas. Hannah and Michael also used this project for their Plant, Soil, and Environmental Science Capstone projects.

The students solicited plant donations from Pierson Nurseries and O'Donal's Nursery, and coordinated installation on Maine Day with help from Horticulture Club volunteers and UMaine’s facilities department.

Plant varieties were selected for teaching purposes as well as research on Dr. Bryan Peterson’s propagated mountain fly honeysuckle (Lonicera villosa). The soil was amended with compost from UMaine’s Earth Flow In-Vessel Composting System.
