North Mississippi VISTA Project

North Mississippi VISTA Project The North Mississippi VISTA Project works to fight poverty through education across a 23-county area

The North Mississippi VISTA Project works to build sustainable systems that connect the University of Mississippi and its resources to low-income communities throughout a 23-county area. Whenever possible, we develop projects in communities with underperforming schools and/or schools eligible for Title I School Improvement Grants. Our project builds capacity by developing new, meaningful, and sust

ainable connections between our university, with its abundant resources, and the schools, education agencies, and learning organizations already working to move the people of our region toward academic success and higher education.

Inspired by the enduring example of unity in the wake of September 11th, members of the North MS VISTA Project participated in local observances and came together for a day of service. Emphasizing the education and food security areas of our project, our cohort took some time to clean, organize, and restock the Little Free Libraries and Little Free Pantries throughout the Oxford/Lafayette area. Our service project inspired many of our VISTAs to bring the format of the Little Free Libraries and Pantries back to their communities. The time spent together in service allowed our newest cohort to connect, refresh, and brainstorm ideas. We were reminded that sometimes our fellow VISTAs can be one of our most valuable resources.

Special thanks to Stronger Together Oxford for connecting us with this great service opportunity.

Happy week, y'all! Today members of the North Mississippi VISTA Project visited with Dr. Jeff Jackson, chair of the UM Department of Sociology and Anthropology. It was a great conversation about combatting the isolation of service during COVID-19, the power of supervisors who serve as mentors, and the strength of the NMVP network.

Thanks to all the VISTA members who joined: Noele Graham Thornton with the Center for Math and Science Education; Ben Salvador with the Ole Miss School of Education, Steve Bennett with the Union County Heritage Museum, Armonti Johnson with But God Ministries, Jessica Edmond with Operation Fit Nation, Bella St. Amant with the Pontotoc County School District, Brenna Gardner with Oxford Community Market, J.P. Gairhan with the Sunflower County Freedom Project, and Gabby Rush with Doors of Hope Transition Ministries. Special, huge thank you to VISTA Leaders Adriana Cooper and Susan Van Fleet, who lift us all with their example. We appreciate you!
