May was Mental Health Awareness Month at Bergen!

Students, faculty, and staff across campus came together to support their peers and many others struggling with mental and emotional health. The Office of Personal Counseling raised awareness about mental health and offered information about the office’s resources to students. Students wrote positive messages and spent time with therapy dogs on campus.

Those who want guidance to help clarify emotions or issues are encouraged to visit Bergen’s Office of Personal Counseling, located in HS-100 in the Pitkin Education Center. You can also email a personal counselor at [email protected].

Once a Bulldog, Always Bergen!

Bergen alumnus Thomas Derr, ‘17, got his start at Bergen, and recently came back to support students in their academic journeys.

After graduating from Bergen, Derr earned his bachelor’s degree in history from Rutgers University in 2019 and then earned his master’s degree in history from Rutgers University-Newark in 2020. He currently teaches social studies at Garfield high school, and is an adjunct professor of English and head esports coach at Bergen.

“Bergen gave me my start,” said Derr. “I came back to Bergen because it represents a full-circle moment for me: from student, to professor, to coach, all in the same place that first believed in me.”

Bergen’s Cerullo Learning Assistance Center received the “Coaching Program of Excellence Award” from the Association for the Coaching and Tutoring Profession - ACTP.

By expanding awareness of their academic coaching and tutoring services to train student and professional tutors, the Cerullo Center is better able to support Bergen students.

“Creating an environment where both coaches and students can thrive is at the heart of everything we do and I think that intentionality is what sets us apart,” said Cerullo Center Manager Candice Kaup Scioscia.

The Cerullo Center previously won the ACTP’s 2025 “Learning Center of Excellence Award” for two-year institutions.

For the fourth consecutive year, Bergen Community College is recognized as one of the “Most Promising Places to Work in Community Colleges.”

The recognition comes from The EDU Ledger – formerly Diverse: Issues in Higher Education magazine – and NISOD (National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development). Throughout his five years as the College’s president, Eric M. Friedman, Ph.D., prioritized fostering an “ethics of care” mission on campus.

With this vision in mind, Friedman remade the College’s participatory and shared governance structure, enhanced internal communication, and expanded access to health and wellness programs. Initiatives such as these support more than 1,100 full- and part-time Bergen employees!

“We work collaboratively to embrace challenges, practice continuous improvement, and help students achieve success. That’s why Bergen has become a professional home for many – a vocation unto itself – rather than a stop on a professional journey: we embrace the ‘unity’ in ‘community,’” said President Friedman.

Students from Bergen’s Thrive Program visited Rising Star Academy to connect with young learners and create strong pathways to literacy.

During their visit to the Rising Star Academy, Bergen students led interactive book readings along with arts and crafts activities for young readers to connect with the stories they explored.

Visiting Rising Star Academy was a meaningful experience for Bergen students to help young learners foster a love for reading and lifelong learning!

The Thrive Program is made possible through the NJ STARS and Educational Opportunity Fund programs, which motivate students to become leaders and change-makers in the community.
