University of Arizona Cancer Center researchers are leading three of four projects selected for up to $250,000 each through a new U of A and Banner Health initiative designed to move promising health discoveries closer to patients.

This includes Melissa Herbst-Kralovetz, PhD, Cancer Center member and professor of Basic Medical Sciences at the College of Medicine – Phoenix, who is leading development of a noninvasive test for endometrial cancer.

Dr. Herbst-Kralovetz and her collaborators are developing ENDOguard, a noninvasive vaginal swab test that combines biomarkers with machine learning to assess endometrial cancer risk.

The University of Arizona College of Medicine – Phoenix Translational Cardiovascular Research Center (TCRC) proudly marked its sixth anniversary, a significant milestone in advancing cardiovascular research, scientific collaboration, and translational discoveries.

Since its beginning, the TCRC has grown into a nationally recognized hub for cardiovascular research. The center continues to foster collaborations among scientists, clinician-investigators, trainees, and community partners. The center continues to expand its multidisciplinary research programs in cardiac and vascular disease that aim to lead to better treatments for all forms of heart disease. By recruiting and developing exceptional faculty, clinical researchers, postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, and trainees, the TCRC has cultivated a thriving research environment and established strategic collaborations across the U of A and with national and international research partners.

The TCRC also values its commitment to support educational and community outreach efforts that are focused on scientific discovery, mentorship, and cardiovascular health awareness. An example of this is the monthly TCRC seminar series that continues to attract the nation's leading cardiovascular and biomedical researchers to Phoenix to share emerging discoveries, exchange ideas, and foster scientific collaborations.

The University of Arizona leaders joined Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego, members of the Arizona Board of Regents, Arizona health and community partners and the construction team yesterday afternoon to celebrate the placement of the final structural beam atop the new Medical Innovations Building, which is expected to open in October 2027.

Located within the Phoenix Bioscience Core, the new seven-story 200,000-square-foot facility will support a wide variety of medical research activities.

Since its inception, the Flinn Summer Research Internship has hosted dozens of interns across six different disciplines. The program has grown since 2023, when seven interns dove into research during the internship’s pilot year.

Each cohort consists of incredibly bright future scientists with a passion for improving patient health. Past interns represent diverse backgrounds and experiences that culminate in enriching, innovative research projects each summer.
