Re: Re-establishing SHAPE during the COVID-19 era.

August 30, 2020

Dear School of Medicine Students,
Welcome back to the WVU School of Medicine! Clearly these have been trying times that have led to many roadblocks preventing us from carrying on our normal daily activities, let alone the ability to participate in community and student organizations. However, I strongly believe that the needs and missions of our student organizations continue and perhaps are even more important given today’s pandemic and political environment. For this reason, I would like to take this opportunity to introduce you to the Student Healthcare Alliance for Promoting Equality (SHAPE).

Mission:
SHAPE is a multi-purpose student organization that aims to spread awareness to both students and the medical community at large of the unique concerns regarding the LGBTQA+ (le***an, gay, bisexual, transgender, q***r, questioning, allies, asexual, and HIV positive) community from the perspectives of both LGBTQA+ physicians and patients. SHAPE also serves the purpose of providing a safe zone for LGBTQA+ individuals, a friendly and non-judgmental environment, encouragement and mentorship to peers, learning opportunities on issues concerning LGBTQA+ medicine, community outreach, activism, and opportunities to network with the community and future colleagues.

If you share some of these interests, are a part of the included community, or you just want to participate in activities that help SHAPE meet its mission, please join me for a brief organizational ZOOM meeting September 15, 2020 at 7 PM. To help facilitate the ZOOM meeting, I ask that if you are interested, please contact me at the above email and provide your email address? A ZOOM meeting invitation will be sent to you, once I have received your email address.
Thank you very much for taking the time to review this introduction. I hope that you will consider joining us for this great opportunity to serve our community and help others during such a trying time.

Respectfully,

P.S. Martin, MD, SHAPE Faculty Sponsor

Let us not forget those that paved the way for us. Let us especially highlight black trans women, most notably Marsha "Pay it no mind" Johnson, not just for their actions on the days of the Stonewall Riots, but for their lifelong work of organizing and activism.
