Happy 10th birthday to the Point-Arena Stornetta Unit of the California Coastal National Monument!

🎉Ten years ago today, the California Coastal National Monument came ashore! Happy birthday Point Arena-Stornetta! Added by Presidential Proclamation on March 11, 2014, after a huge outpouring of community support, the 1,665-acre Point Arena-Stornetta Unit is the first on-shore portion of the California Coastal National Monument.

Coastal prairies, dramatic coastal bluffs and abundant bird life highlight the Point Arena-Stornetta Lands. This is a working landscape where cattle grazing exists in harmony with hikers and wildlife watchers. The unit spans the coastline from Arena Cove to the pda'haū, Garcia River, and can be reached through one of three local access points.

On May 18th, the community of Point Arena will be celebrating the 10-year anniversary at the annual event. Point Arena Gateway Partners are working to make this years celebration sparkle with special guests, guided walks and even birthday cupcakes! More information about this event will be coming your way soon.

We are excited to announce a rare solo concert event with Alex de Grassi to benefit the Mendocino College Coastal Field Station! The concert is scheduled for Saturday, February 25 at 7pm in the Little Theater on the Ukiah campus of Mendocino College. Tickets are available at the Mendocino Book Company or online at https://mndocf.ejoinme.org/AlexdeGrassiConcert.

As Mendocino College commemorates its 50th anniversary, this concert is in part to celebrate the 40+ years of providing active learning opportunities for Mendocino College students at the unique coastal property as well as being a special fundraising event during our ongoing capital campaign for facility repairs and upgrades. We cannot think of a more memorable way to do this than through an evening with Alex de Grassi!

Alex de Grassi has been a unique voice in the world of acoustic guitar for the past 40 plus years and his solo steel-string guitar recordings have influenced a generation of younger players. He has performed in concert venues and festivals around the world including Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, Montreux Jazz Festival, Belfast International Festival and the Bath Guitar Festival. The Wall Street Journal has called his playing “flawless” and Billboard hails his “intricate finger-picking technique with an uncanny gift for melodic invention.” His debut 1978 recording, Turning: Turning Back (cited by Acoustic Guitar magazine among their top ten essential fingerstyle recordings), and the subsequent recordings Slow Circle (1979) and Southern Exposure (1984), and his GRAMMY® nominated recording The Water Garden (1998) are considered classics of the solo guitar genre. A Bay Area native, Alex currently lives in Mendocino County.

Advance tickets can be purchased online (https://mndocf.ejoinme.org/AlexdeGrassiTickets) or at the Mendocino Book Company for $30. Tickets at the door will be $40 (cash or check only). Proceeds from the event will go to the Friends of the Mendocino College Coastal Field Station and Natural Sciences for the upgrade and improvement of the Coastal Field Station near Point Arena.

We look forward to seeing you at this special event!

Meet the Point Arena mountain beaver!

Considered the most primitive living rodent, these mammals average about one foot in length and weigh around two to four pounds. While mountain beavers occur in many areas throughout Pacific Northwest, the endangered Point Arena subspecies is only found within Mendocino County, California.

They also spend up to 23 hours resting underground.
