China’s Gain in Biotech Raises Alarm. This is the headline from a recent NYT article. A reader could be forgiven for thinking China has developed a new biological weapon that will soon be released on innocent Americans. But no, the article is actually about China’s rapidly developing biotechnology industry. The threat referred to is actually to the dominance of American companies in the biotechnology field. Once lagging far behind in the development of new drugs, China is now a powerhouse in creating and testing cutting-edge medicines. U.S. officials and pharmaceutical executives are concerned that America will lose its position as the leader in biotechnical development. U.S. biotech companies say that they are having trouble keeping up with Chinese companies’ rates of producing research papers, patents on new drugs and clinical trials. Thus, it is not a concern about the health of the American people, but a worry about maintaining the huge profits of the U.S. pharmaceutical industry.
Once again, we see China overtaking the U.S. in an important economic sector. They have achieved a lead in the fields of renewable energy and now seem ready to do the same in biotechnology. The Trump administration continues its strategy of trying to dominant China and curtail its development. It doesn’t seem to be working. Trump may want to reconsider his attacks on and suppression of universities and scientific research.

A.I. vs Labor in China and the U.S. A recent court ruling in China said that a company had illegally laid off a worker who was replaced by A.I. software. Along with other rulings by Chinese courts the message to companies is that the growing use of A.I. must be balanced by recognition of workers’ rights and interests. This is a far cry from the policies of the U.S. government which prioritizes increasing the benefits and wealth of the rich rather than the interests of the working class. A Chinese arbitration panel ruled that as companies benefit from increasing the use of A.I., they must also protect workers’ rights. This is only the start of a long struggle as the growth of A.I. threatens to increase joblessness, but China is trying to deal with the issue while the U.S. government continues to ignore it.
Ceasefires no longer mean what they used to. Over 900 Palestinians in Gaza have been killed by Israel since the current ceasefire was declared last October. During this time only 4 Israelis have been killed in their occupation of Gaza. In Lebanon, over 3,000 people have been killed by Israeli bombings while about a dozen Israeli soldiers have died since a ceasefire was engineered by the Trump administration. Yet Trump wants the Arab world to embrace Israel and normalize relations. Truly these are strange, dark times.

America’s Folly. President Trump has never been so unpopular, yet he maintains a strangle hold on the Republican Party. Recent primary elections showed that Trump can unseat nearly any congress member who he opposes. He had the audacity to get a $1.8 billion slush fund created so that people who felt they were “persecuted” by the Biden administration could get financial compensation. Now it looks like he has backed himself into a corner where he will have no choice but to restart the war against Iran. Netanyahu, who needs the war for his political survival, has been urging Trump to attack.
Is his upping the pressure on Cuba a ploy to distract attention from his failures in dealing with Iran? Trump seems to think regime change in Cuba will be as easy as the kidnapping of Maduro from Venezuela was. Americans are about to be snookered again. The U.S. government has indicted Raul Castro for the shooting down of two planes 30 years ago at the same time it conducts a murderous campaign of blowing up boats in international waters that has killed nearly 200 people.
How was this man elected?

Israeli Bases, U.S. Debt, and the Question.
Unbeknown to the U.S. and Iraq (really?), Israel constructed two bases in the southwest desert of Iraq over the last year. They were used as forward operating sites for Israel’s attack on Iran. One base was accidently discovered by an Iraqi Bedouin in his pickup on his way to pick up supplies. He was chased away by gunfire, and then by a helicopter gunship which eventually killed him and torched his truck. The killing was witnessed by fellow Bedouins. Upon investigation, Iraqi officials said that, yes, there was a second base as well. This is like the Old West on steroids. There are no rules, morals or standards of behavior. Might makes right, and if you don’t like it, well, that’s too bad.
In case you missed it, the U.S. federal debt just surpassed the U.S. total Gross Domestic Product (GDP) for a twelve-month period. This is only the second time since WWII that this milestone has been reached. The first was for a very short time in 1946. What is noteworthy this time is that the federal debt is projected to continue to increase. By 2056, the Congressional Budget Office expects the federal debt to reach 175% of the U.S. GDP. What this means is that the federal government has to issue Treasury Notes just to pay for the interest on the debt which alone now exceeds the defense budget. Note that Hegseth has asked for $1.5 trillion for defense in the coming budget year. Other causes for the increasing federal debt include paying for the 2008 fiscal crisis, the growing expense for caring for an aging population and the Trump tax cuts for the wealthy. Hold on to your hat.
Last week Trump already had answered the Question (why can’t Iran have a nuclear weapon). He said that it’s because the “Iranians are crazy.” This from a self-certified genius who has bragged about passing several cognitive tests. If any country is a danger to use a nuclear weapon, it’s Israel and the U.S., who’ve shown no reluctance to attack other countries. The only solution to nuclear weapon proliferation is world-wide nuclear disarmament. A good place to start is for the U.S. to get onboard and sign the U.N. Treaty to Ban Nuclear Weapons.
