A place to grow, lead and make a difference 🌳

“My doctor is very knowledgeable about what is going on with me. She offered helpful suggestions, coordinated referrals and has excellent technique with OMT.” That is the kind of feedback that defines the resident experience at SIU School of Medicine. Dr. Amy Sands, a resident physician, is recognized by patients for her thoughtful care, clear communication and hands-on skill in osteopathic manipulative treatment. She listens, she problem-solves and she follows through.

At SIU School of Medicine, residents are not just learning medicine. They are building meaningful relationships with patients and gaining the confidence to lead care from day one. For medical students exploring residency, this is what it looks like to train in a program that values:
📌Patient-centered care
📌Strong clinical mentorship
📌Hands-on experience with techniques like OMT
📌A supportive, team-based environment

Your future in medicine starts with experiences like these. Learn more about residency opportunities at SIU School of Medicine Quincy, click here: https://www.siumed.edu/fcm/quincy

From curiosity to national recognition

Laica Arcibal, DO, a resident physician at SIU Center for Family Medicine – Quincy, was recognized as a poster winner at the ACOFP 63rd Annual Convention & Scientific Seminars, where she presented “What is behind the lesion?”

Her work reflects a core part of training at SIU Medicine, staying curious and looking deeper to better understand each patient’s story. Her poster explored how conditions that seem routine can sometimes point to more serious disease, and how thoughtful history taking can lead to better care.

“It was nerve wracking, but also exciting,” said Dr. Arcibal. “I felt honored to be part of such an important event and supported by my attendings.”

Moments like this show what is possible in our residency programs. Residents are supported, challenged and given opportunities to grow as physicians and leaders in family medicine.

We are proud of Dr. Arcibal for representing SIU Medicine on a national stage and for the impact she is making in patient care.

Hands-on learning in action!

Our Family Medicine residents recently participated in an OB Simulation Lab at Blessing-Rieman College of Nursing. These high-fidelity simulations provide a safe, supportive environment to practice critical obstetric skills, build confidence, and strengthen teamwork.

Experiences like this help prepare our residents to deliver excellent, patient-centered care when it matters most. We’re grateful for the opportunity to collaborate and learn alongside our partners at Blessing-Rieman.

Congratulations to Dr. Yati Gupta on her nomination for the Blessing Health Exceptional Provider Award in Quincy, IL!

This recognition speaks to the compassion, dedication, and patient-centered care she brings to our community every day. While she was not selected as this year’s recipient, being nominated is a meaningful honor and a reflection of the impact she has on those around her. At the Blessing Health Provider Reception on April 8, Dr. Gupta was recognized alongside other outstanding providers. Her nomination beautifully captured what we see daily: “Dr. Gupta is such a sweet, nice and compassionate doctor… She treated me like a human being, talked to me like a friend and co-worker… It felt good to be treated as we are on the same page.”

We are proud to have Dr. Gupta as part of our residency family and grateful for the care she provides to our patients and community.

Thinking about residency in family medicine?

At SIU Medicine, our residents do more than train, they lead, mentor and connect with the communities they serve.

Recently, our resident physicians visited Liberty Schools to engage with students in grades 9–12. They shared what life in residency is really like and offered hands-on experiences that sparked curiosity about careers in medicine.

Students had the chance to:
Use an otoscope to view the ear on a screen
Listen to their own heartbeat with a stethoscope
Ask questions and hear directly from residents about their training

Opportunities like this reflect what makes our program unique. You will build clinical skills while making a meaningful impact beyond the clinic.

If you are looking for a residency experience grounded in community, education and purpose, you will find it here.
