Virginia Western Community College is a two-year public institution of higher education operating under a statewide system of community colleges. The College operates under the policies established by the State Board for Community Colleges and the Virginia Western Community College Board. The College serves Roanoke, Salem, Roanoke County, Craig County, southern Botetourt County, and northern Frank

lin County. Day, evening, and weekend classes are provided on a 70-acre campus located in Southwest Roanoke. Classes are also offered at off-campus locations in the area including the Franklin Center in Rocky Mount and the Greenfield Education & Training Center in Daleville. Congratulations to the newest graduates of the Virginia Western Radiation Oncology Program!

We are proud to recognize and celebrate the 22 newly pinned graduates honored during the Radiation Oncology pinning ceremony. This milestone marks the culmination of their hard work, dedication, and commitment to compassionate patient care and excellence in the field of radiation oncology.

As they take the next important step in their professional journey, these graduates will be completing their national certification boards throughout the latter part of May and June. We wish each of them continued success as they move forward into their careers, making a meaningful impact in healthcare and the lives of the patients they will serve.

Virginia Western students were recently recognized alongside some of the top community college students in the state at the 2026 Phi Theta Kappa All-Virginia Academic Team Awards Ceremony in Richmond.

The event honored students for their academic excellence, leadership, and service both inside and outside the classroom. Hosted by the Virginia Community College System, the ceremony celebrated approximately 80 students from across Virginia’s community colleges.

Congratulations to all of the students recognized for representing the very best of Virginia’s Community Colleges!

Virginia Western Community College would like to congratulate recent honorees at the Roanoke Blacksburg Technology Council’s TechNite gala. Among them are two with close ties to the College.

Leah Thomas, Project VITAL outreach specialist at Virginia Western, received the STEM-H Educator Award in Higher Ed. As RBTC noted in its award news release: “She is an active member of the tech ecosystem and gifted education who has undertaken biotech outreach with over 400 elementary school students at RCPS and the BEACON program at the YMCA as well as planned a STEM Day. Leah motivates and inspires everyone around her and has impacted literally thousands of learners in the Roanoke Blacksburg region.”

Dr. Ken Nicely, Superintendent of Roanoke County Public Schools, was one of two recipients of this year’s Ruby Award, along with Dr. Angela Joyner of Radford University. The Ruby Award recognizes an outstanding member who has proven to be a brilliant and valuable asset to the Roanoke Blacksburg region. Dr. Nicely serves on Virginia Western’s Local Advisory Board.
