This year marks the 25th anniversary of the partnership between RIT and the Hochschule Anhalt University of Applied Sciences in Dessau, Germany. In the 25 years since the partnership started, 83 students from RIT’s College of Art and Design have studied abroad in Dessau and RIT has welcomed 50 students from Anhalt to Rochester.

We asked two of the students from RIT who went to Dessau, Germany at the Hochschule Anhalt University of Applied Sciences and had some interesting answers. Nicole Killian who is a BFA Graphic Design student and went to Dessau in 2004 said “I spread my wings in Dessau. Without a grasp of the language, I had to use different skills to communicate and explore. It put me in a place of vulnerability, and I had to learn how to ask for help and be humble. These are skills any designer and an inquisitive person needs to be culturally literate, collaborative, and compassionate”. Currently, Nicole runs a study abroad program, and her study abroad in 2004 has tremendously helped her excel in her current job of running the study abroad program.

On the other hand, we asked Taylor Clow one of our recent study abroad students who went to Dessau in 2017 in Industrial Design. Talor said that “While in Dessau, for me, it was not as much about the classes but about the people. I had the opportunity to experience design taught from a different lens than what I was used to in RIT, and it was incredible.! Currently, Taylor works as part of an international design team. Traveling for education, business and pleasure has allowed me to understand and work with a variety of people, cultures, and personalities. Dessau has been a life-changing experience for all our students and has helped them in their current careers. We look forward to our partnership with Dessau for many years to come.

Our Global Scholars program also hosts exchange students from some of RIT’s international partner universities. For this week Global Scholar spotlight, we have F***y Sivhed, a senior student from Malmö University in Sweden. F***y is completing her last semester of a bachelor's in computer information science. F***y is currently taking multiple practical courses at RIT Rochester. Her favorite and most interesting course is 3D Tech for Prosthetic Applications. In this course, F***y is learning how to 3D model prosthetics and making prosthetics more affordable and accessible for low- and middle-income countries. F***y’s research is primarily focused on reducing the cost of production of prosthetic arms by using compact machines which can be easily transported and carried anywhere with the help of one person. F***y is a huge fan of Hockey and in her free time, she loves to attend hockey games. F***y’s research and development on this topic are much needed in developing countries where access to a prosthetic arm can be difficult due to cost. By utilizing 3D printing, the cost can be brought down, making the prosthetic more accessible and affordable.

In this week’s Global Scholar spotlight, we have Tringa Jashari, a 4th year student from RIT Kosovo who is planning to finish her degree at the RIT Rochester campus next Spring. Tringa, an Applied Arts and Science Major with a concentration in Management & Entrepreneurship, from the School of Individualized Study, is also a part-time actor in her native Kosovo. In addition to being an actor, she is also a writer. She is currently working on her first novel which she hopes to publish and, in the future, adapt into a screenplay. The flexibility of Tringa’s degree in Applied Arts and Science and RIT’s position at the intersection of technology and the arts, has allowed Tringa to expand her studies beyond Management & Entrepreneurship into other diverse areas such as acting and writing. We cannot wait to see where Tringa’s Global Scholar experience will take her!

Excited to be celebrating RIT Croatia's 25th Anniversary! As RIT's first global campus, Croatia has been the trailblazer for RIT's international education initiatives. In 1997 when we opened the doors to 75 students, it was hard to imagine RIT Croatia today - campus location in Dubrovnik and Zagreb, 4 dually accredited undergraduate degrees and 2 graduate degrees, over 800 students currently enrolled, more than 2,600 alumni, and well over 500 study abroad students. Our faculty, students, and alumni in Croatia are making incredible impact throughout Europe and around the world - we couldn't be more proud and excited for the next 25!

On this week’s Global Scholar Student Spotlight:
We introduce Mujtaba Yar Khan Siddiqui a second-year graduate student in the Masters of Science in Mechanical Engineering program at Rochester Institute of technology Dubai. Mujtaba is planning on completing his Master's degree while participating in the Global Scholars program at Rochester Institute of Technology. Mujtaba is no stranger to RIT, having previously been part of the Global Scholars as an undergraduate student. Being a Global Scholar as a graduate student has provided Mujtaba the opportunity to work on carbon nanotube fabrication alongside professor Michael Schrlau. Mujtaba works on the fabrication of these tubes which are used in the field of medicine to inject any sort of nanoparticles, nucleic acid, and macromolecules into human cells. In the future, when fully developed, these nanotubes will be available for many medical therapeutic treatments. While these nanotubes already exist and have been used for quite a while, their production is complex causing a higher demand than the production/supply capabilities. In his research, Mujtaba, along with Professor Michael Schrlau is working towards finding more efficient ways of producing these tubes to be able to meet demand.
