March SAT and School Day SAT results are out. Now what?😳

When an admissions officer opens your application file, they’re working through a checklist in their head.🤔💭 Here’s what they’re usually thinking about:

📋 Academics & Test Score: Given what classes your school offered, did you challenge yourself? Do your course choices match where you say you want to go and what you want to major in? How does your SAT/ACT score fit the rest of your academic picture?

🏅 Activities & Honors: What have you actually committed to? What did your involvement look like beyond just showing up?

📝 Personal Statement: Who are you beyond the data? What do I now know about you that I couldn’t have learned anywhere else in this file?

✉️ Recommendations: What do the adults in your life say about you?

🏫 Demonstrated Interest: Has this student actually engaged with our school?

💰 Financial Aid: Can the school make this work financially?

➕ Additional Information: Is there context I need to fully understand this student’s story? (This is also where students can address unique academic or testing circumstances.)

Common App, the predominant college application platform, regularly releases data on the state of first-year application trends. Their latest data runs through March 1, and here are some of the highlights:

1️⃣ Applicant and application counts grew. As of March 1, 1,429,747 first-year applicants had applied to 911 colleges, a 2% increase from this date last year.📈

2️⃣ The Southwestern region grew at nearly twice the rate (8%) of the next fastest-growing region, largely due to states like Texas and Oklahoma. Texas continues to outpace other large states in applicant growth (7%).🤠

3️⃣ The majority of students reported standardized test scores with their applications this year. The number of applicants reporting a test score has continued to grow since the 2021-22 cycle, with a 10% increase among reporters and a 6% decrease among non-reporters.📝

This data reveals a few important things. More and more Texans are applying to schools via the Common App. And more and more students applying via Common App are including SAT/ACT scores in their applications; they are now the majority.‼️👀
