The purpose of the Black Student Union, BSU, is to promote activities of common interest, as well as cultural and educational benefits for the African American student body at California State University, San Bernardino. In addition, the BSU is the "umbrella" organization of many of the African American student organizations, providing a forum for them to voice their differences, goals, and ideas.
The Black Student Union is an organization dedicated to
• Academic Excellence
• Community Service and Outreach
• Cultural Enrichment and Awareness
• And Unity
ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE
The goal of every college student is graduation, and as the BSU, we want to do everything in our power to help our members reach that goal. This year we have decided to increase our focus on education. BSU members can look forward to “College Success” workshops, a BSU Honor Roll (with a reward for our members with the highest gpa)
COMMUNITY SERVICE AND OUTREACH -
Giving back to the community is a critical aspect of the BSU platform. We will be increasing our outreach efforts on the CSUSB campus and surrounding cities in the Inland Empire. Our members will have the opportunity to volunteer their time to community food drives, events hosted by other CSUSB organizations (such as Enrichment Through Action) and other projects. One of the most well known community outreach programs, Unity Day, is an opportunity for our members to give back to their community. Unity Day is a conference co-sponsored by the Cross Cultural Center and Enrichment Through Action. Each year they bring over a hundred inner- city students to CSUSB to give them a glimpse of college life and to encourage them to attend college themselves. CULTURAL ENRICHMENT AWARENESS-
As CSUSB students, it’s very easy to slip into the “Cal State Bubble” and lose awareness of the events occurring outside our university walls( and sometimes within them) . Realizing this, BSU will be focusing on educating our students on issues affecting the state, the nation, the world and subsequently, us. We also plan to inform our members of their African and African American History, enabling our members to reconnect to their roots and gain valuable insight into the lives of their ancestors. In another effort to expand our cultural horizons, BSU members will also be exposed to other cultures, ethnic groups and ways of life through collaboration with other Multicultural Student Organizations on campus. UNITY- On top of everything else, BSU is here to serve as a network of friends and a support system as students complete their college years. Throughout the year we will be hosting a number of events that allow our members to simply relax, enjoy each others company, and develop friendships to last a lifetime.
