Liver Cancer Awareness Month

October is Liver Cancer Awareness Month, an opportunity to raise awareness about risk factors, prevention, early detection, and advances in liver cancer treatment.

At UC San Diego Health’s Liver Cancer Clinic, patients receive highly specialized, coordinated care from nationally ranked cancer and liver specialists. As San Diego County's only NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, UC San Diego Health offers innovative treatment options, including surgery, liver transplantation, radiation therapy, targeted therapies, immunotherapy, and access to cutting-edge clinical trials.

ACTRI supports this work by providing the clinical and translational research infrastructure that enables collaborative research, promising clinical trials, and the development of more effective and personalized approaches to liver cancer treatment.

Together, research, clinical care, and community awareness are helping drive progress toward earlier detection, improved therapies, and better outcomes for people affected by liver cancer.

We had a productive gathering for our latest ACTRI CAB (Community Advisory Board) meeting hosted at Health Center Partners of Southern California.

Our discussions focused on community engagement strategy, reviewing recruitment and membership processes, and identifying key composition factors such as sector, research experience, and health priorities to ensure diverse representation across our initiatives.

Between discussions, members enjoyed light refreshments and spent the final portion of the meeting in a partner spotlight session, where everyone took turns sharing updates about their individual organizations and ongoing community efforts.

From CADRE scholars to UC San Diego students! 🎓

We were excited to bring together CADRE alumni Harpuneet Virk, Sofia Mendez Hernandez, Antonina Trusova, and Emily Tran, who are all beginning their next chapter at UC San Diego this fall as transfer students from Mesa College.

These CADRE alumni continue to support one another as they navigate this exciting transition, sharing UC student resources, comparing class schedules, and preparing for the start of the fall quarter.

We’re proud to see the connections built through CADRE continue to grow beyond the program!

💚 Depression Awareness Month

October is Depression Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness about depression, reduce stigma, and highlight research focused on improving mental health care.

At UC San Diego, researchers are studying new ways to better understand and treat anxiety, depression, and social disconnection. One current study, the Social Connectedness Study, is exploring whether a dopamine-related medication may help improve motivation, interest, pleasure, well-being, and social connectedness in adults ages 18–50 experiencing symptoms of anxiety or depression. Additional psychiatry studies from UC San Diego collaborators are also helping advance research on mood, behavior, and mental health.

ACTRI supports this work by providing the clinical and translational research infrastructure that helps move discoveries into patient care. Through clinical studies and collaborative research, ACTRI helps advance more effective and personalized approaches to mental health treatment.

Together, research, awareness, and compassionate care can help improve support and outcomes for those affected by depression.

Recently at ACTRI, the OCR held a successful Investigator Workshop led by Dr. Susan Little—Professor of Medicine, Director of the Office of Clinical Research Health Sciences, and Infectious Disease Specialist at UC San Diego Health. Attendees gathered to review core research guidelines, ethical standards, and operational requirements.

The event also featured great networking and lunch for all participants. It was a wonderful opportunity for investigators to connect, learn, and collaborate on clinical research operations.
