Happy birthday to NASA astronaut and geobiologist Zena Cardman, who served as commander of the SpaceX Crew-11 mission, which launched to the International Space Station in August 2025. Cardman and her three crewmates returned to Earth in January, a month early, because of an undisclosed medical issue. In October 2021, NASA announced that the International Astronomical Union had approved naming geological landmarks on Pluto after trailblazing aviator Bessie Coleman and pioneering astronaut Sally Ride. In honor of Coleman, the first African American woman to earn a pilot’s license, a mountain in Pluto’s southern hemisphere was dubbed Coleman Mons. And to recognize Ride, a cliff on the southern tip of Pluto’s heart-shaped feature was named Ride Rupes.

Members of NASA’s New Horizons mission team proposed the names in keeping with the idea that Pluto features should be named for “historic pioneers who crossed new horizons in the exploration of the Earth, sea and sky.” New Horizons conducted a flyby of Pluto and sent back images in 2015.

Ride was finishing her doctorate in physics that year when she was chosen as one of NASA’s first six female astronaut candidates. NASA astronaut Ronald McNair was born on Oct. 21, 1950, in segregated South Carolina. In 1984 he flew aboard shuttle Challenger on mission STS-41B to become the second African American person in space. On his second mission, in 1986, he died along with six crewmates in the Challenger explosion.

McNair earned his doctorate in physics at MIT before he was chosen for the astronaut corps in 1978, along with Sally Ride. An accomplished saxophonist, he is shown playing during his free time on mission 41B. https://buff.ly/LpriRaE NASA photo

On Oct. 18, 2019, NASA astronauts Jessica Meir and Christina Koch conducted the first-ever all-female spacewalk. The two spent more than 7 hours outside the International Space Station working to replace a failed battery unit. Koch subsequently circled the Moon as part of the Artemis II crew, and last week she was named NASA's acting deputy chief engineer. To celebrate the 25th anniversary of Sally Ride Science, we're sharing "25 Things You Might Not Know About Sally Ride." For instance, did you know that America's first woman in space was a serious Trekkie? Growing up, Ride was a big fan of the original "Star Trek" TV series. In 1995, she attended a premiere screening of the "Star Trek: Voyager" series. Actress Kate Mulgrew, aka Captain Janeway, gave Ride a Star Trek crew pin.
