Wittenberg University Department of Communication & Digital Media

Wittenberg University Department of Communication & Digital Media Wittenberg University Department of Communication & Digital Media Communication is the study of how people make meaning.

At Wittenberg, the Department of Communication & Digital Media adopts a broad perspective on this topic by challenging students to examine the nature, processes, and effects of human symbolic interaction in a number of contexts. These include the study of rhetoric, media, and culture. Our major reinforces Wittenberg's liberal arts mission rather than narrowly training a student for a particular ca

reer. Our students develop the capacities to recognize and evaluate underlying assumptions and values; to work effectively with others through collaboration, team work and community building; to participate in mediation and conflict resolution; to develop aural, visual, technological, and information literacy—all knowledge and skills that we believe are imperative for a quality life in the 21st century. Students also have the opportunities to apply their understandings of communication through courses or internships. The major culminates in a capstone project during the senior year, for which our students have prepared by taking courses in communication theory and research methods.

Dear Wittenberg Communication Alumni and Friends,

The year was 1995, over 30 years ago. Fresh out of graduate school, Cathy Egley Waggoner joined the Wittenberg faculty as a member of the Department of Theatre & Dance, hired to teach speech courses. With grit and determination over four years, she fought for the development of a communication major for Wittenberg, establishing the Department of Communication, now known as Communication & Digital Media.

Today, we are reaching out to you to let you know that Dr. Waggoner has decided to retire in May. At her request, we will not have a traditional retirement celebration at Wittenberg. Instead, she has suggested we host an online gathering of department graduates from across the miles — and the decades.

Please save the date for this celebratory event!
TUESDAY, MAY 5, 7-8 p.m. EDT, online via Teams.

Whether or not you can attend, Dr. Waggoner would love to hear from you! Please fill out the provided questions listed in the link below. RSVP for the Teams celebration and share using the link below.

On April 15, this year’s C.A.B.L.E. group had the opportunity to tour and visit alumni at four different organizations in the Greater Columbus area. Students also presented two case studies during their visit.

1 MurphyEpson - A female-owned communication + engagement + public affairs firm driven by the greater good.
2 Columbus Chamber of Commerce - A non-profit business support organization serving over 1,300 small to medium-sized companies.
3 ScottsMiracle-Gro - The world’s largest marketer of branded consumer lawn and garden products.
4 National Church Residences - A large, faith-based non-profit organization providing affordable senior housing, assisted living, and memory care services.

James D’Isidoro, Ava Golem, Alana Hernandez Sanchez, and Joslin Mefford were tasked with developing strategic ideas to increase the share of online checkouts that include more than one brand for ScottsMiracle-Gro.

Taylor Butts, Karley Moore, Zach Newton, and Hannah Peterson were tasked with exploring three options for National Church Residences on how to reach the goal of serving 100,000 seniors by 2030, wherever they call home.

Thank you to all the companies and alumni who donated their time and for giving these students invaluable real-world experience!

If you are a current student, and will be a junior in the fall, consider applying for C.A.B.L.E.
